Second Grade
Reading
Students have been describing how
words and phrases supply rhythm and
meaning in a poem. They have been
identifying the rhyme, rhythm, and
alliteration in poetry as well as
experimenting with writing their own
examples of alliteration. Students have
also been using illustrations and words in
print to demonstrate understanding of
characters, setting, or plot.
Writing
In class we are using one of our favorite
books to write a book review. Students
are writing an opinion piece in the form
of a letter. They are learning to use
adjectives and adverbs to add description
in their writing. They are focusing their
opinions on different aspects of the book
such as the author’s style, how they can
relate to the characters, the emotional
impact of the story, the illustrations, or
personal connections they make with the
book.
Math
As we are finishing our study of time, we
are beginning to study geometry.
Students must be able to partition shapes
into equal shares and describe fractional
parts using halves, thirds, fourths, etc.
Students must be able to describe wholes
as fractions (two halves, three thirds, four
fourths). Also, students should be able to
recognize that equal shares of identical
wholes don’t always have the same shape.
Social Studies
We continue to study basic economic
principals and decision making.
Students are beginning to thinking
critically about available resources and
workers needed to produce goods.
They will be examining different types
of markets where buyers and sellers
can meet to exchange goods and
services. Also, they have determined
how inventions of new products have
changed the way people live, work, and
play.
Science
We are now observing changes in our
radish plants as well as the sun and the
moon! Students continue to make
observations and compare their findings
with their peers. In addition, we have
been identifying, sequencing, and
comparing the stages in the life cycle of
various plants and animals.
