WEEKLY
UPDATE
Greenwood
Elementary School
Brookeville, MD
3/ 11/ 16
Second Grade
Reading
Students have been recounting key ideas
and details from poetry, using sentencelevel context as clues to the meanings of
words and phrases, and using individual
words to predict the meaning of
compound words.
In groups, students are asking and
answering such questions as who, what,
when, why, and how to demonstrate
understanding of key details in a text.
Also, we have been describing how
characters in a story respond to
challenges.
Math
As we continue our study of time,
students are working to write and tell
time to the nearest five minutes and
identify a.m. and p.m. As a challenge,
students will be using clocks, elapsed
time rulers, and number lines as tools to
determine elapsed time. Students must
be able to match a digital time to an
analog clock and state the time in
multiple ways (half past, quarter past,
quarter to, etc.)
Thank you!
Thank you to all of the chaperones who
joined us for Jack and Phil, Slayers of
Giants at Imagination Stage. This spinoff
of Jack and the Beanstalk was a lot of
fun!
Social Studies
In continuing our study of economics,
students have been describing the
human, natural, and capital resources
used to produce goods and identifying
examples of specialized workers in
the school and community. Also, we
have been identifying goods and
services provided by businesses and
the government.
Science
In science, we have created a humanmade habitat to investigate the
conditions seeds need to grow into
plants. We have planted radish seeds
and look forward to observing
changes in the seeds!
Please continue to observe the moon
for just one more week!
