Second Grade
Reading
We have begun reading literary text in
the form of poetry. Students have been
using visualization as a technique to
demonstrate understanding of key
details in the setting, characters or plot
of a poem. Students are also describing
how information from illustrations can
help you understand characters and
setting in a poem. Students are learning
how words and phrases supply rhythm
and meaning in poems, and students are
also reading poems to acknowledge
differences in the points of views of
characters. They do this by speaking in
a different voice for each character when
reading dialogue aloud.
Math
Students have used been using
strategies to solve word problems
involving length and two-step word
problems.
Also, we are beginning to study time.
Using mini geared clocks at school,
students must be able to show, tell, and
write times to the nearest five minutes.
Social Studies
In continuing our study of economics,
students have been identifying the human,
natural, and capital resources used to
produce goods.
Science
In science, we have begun a life science
study of animal habitats. Using print
materials, e-books, and Pebble Go
students have been reading for
information about different habitats.
Students must be able to define a
habitat and describe how plants and
animals rely on their habitat to meet
their basic needs. As a homework
project, students will construct a
shoebox habitat to demonstrate their
learning. Students can use their
research from Super Reader #9 as well
as any other resources to gather
information for the project. Students
may use magazines, construction paper,
figures, etc. to design their habitat.
Students should continue to observe the
moon and describe the phases. Our
final Moon Journal reflection is due
Friday, March 18th.
