Second Grade
Reading
In reading, we have been using
informational text to develop vocabulary
by determining the meaning of new
words and phrases. In response to our
reading, we have been using adjectives
and adverbs to add further description.
Students have been making connections
to our social studies content and have
been using images to better understand
the text.
Please have your child bring a
favorite book to school on Thursday,
March 3rd! We will be using it for an
upcoming writing project.
Math
Students continue to estimate and
measure lengths using appropriate tools.
Using real-life objects, students have
been measuring to determine how many
units longer one object is than another
object at home and at school.
Students are conducting surveys and
collecting data to construct line plots.
For example, we’re making line plots of
our heights, the length of our shoes, and
the number of pets we have. Students
then interpret the line plots and identify
the mode and range of the data.
Students will be using addition and
subtraction within 100 to solve and write
word problems.
Science
Students are learning ways to identify
and describe the observable properties
of stars. They are also learning how
groups of starts form constellations in
the night sky. They may identify some
of these as they are observing the moon
each day. If you are having difficulty
seeing the moon, remember students
can view the phases at the websites
included with their journals. Also,
resources such as the SkyView app will
help to identify those constellations they
may be seeing.
Writing
Students continue to write opinion pieces
using details and facts to help support
their opinions. Also, students are using
their Super Reader animal research for
opinion writing and to write riddles!
