WEEKLY
UPDATE

Second Grade
Reading/Writing
In connection with our learning in social
studies, this week we’ve read non-fiction
books about inventions. We’ve used
these books to identify the purpose of
the text and to develop vocabulary by
determining the meaning of new words.
These books also enabled us to identify
real life problems that were solved by
the creation of these new inventions.
We have also been focusing on how
writers use adjectives and adverbs to
add description to nouns and verbs.
Math
Students have been measuring lengths
using appropriate tools (rulers, meter
sticks, yard sticks). They have been
measuring to determine how many units
longer one object is than another object
(inches and centimeters). They are also
using strategies and tools to measure
crooked paths. Students must
remember to label the units used
when measuring! In addition, students
have been writing and solving addition and
subtraction problems involving lengths
(within 100). Next, they will begin to
construct and interpret line plots.
Writing
Students are writing opinion pieces that
supply reasons to support their view. They
are learning to form and use regular and
irregular plural nouns and use linking words
to expand sentences.
Science
Please remind your child to record their
moon observations daily. If you miss
seeing the moon at night, you can visit
the websites listed on the front cover of
the observation journal to see the
phases of the moon by date.
The students will use their recorded
observable properties of the moon at
school to compare their finding with their
peers. Lastly, they should be able to
identify and describe physical features of
the moon as compared to the earth.
Social Studies
Students have been identifying examples
of technology and how their changes
have affected the way people live, work,
and play. They have begun the study of
economics by comparing types of
transportation and technology used to
communicate today and long ago.
