WEEKLY UPDATE Greenwood Elementary School Brookeville, MD 2/ 12/ 16 Second Grade Reading/TASS In connection with this quarter’s TASS skills, students are learning to be academic risk takers. As we have been reading about different technology, we have concluded that the inventors were risk takers. Using books such as Inventing the Telephone, Telephones Over the Years, Using Science, and Pop! The Invention of Bubble Gum, students practiced asking and answering thick and thin questions to demonstrate understanding of key details. They also used glossaries and context clues to determine meaning of words. Math Students have been using square tiles and rulers to measure the length of objects in inch units. Students constructed their own 12inch ruler or yardstick to use as a tool to measure to the nearest inch or foot. Using these tools, students are determining how much longer one object is than another and expressing the differences in inches. Also, student have been using their addition and subtraction skills to solve word problems involving lengths. Science Students have begun observing the moon and are expected to record their observations in their Moon Journals daily. At school we have identified and described the physical features of the surface of the moon and have compared them with Earth. Social Studies Students have defined technology and identified examples of technology used by consumers. Students have also been analyzing why consumers use technology in their daily lives and examining how technology affects the way people live, work, and play.
