Second Grade
Reading
We have begun Quarter 3 by reading
informational texts to introduce the
topic “What is Technology?”
Students have been asking and
answering who, what, where, when,
why, and how questions to
demonstrate understanding of key
details in a text. Students have also
compared and contrasted the most
important points presented in two
texts on the same topic: telephones.
In addition, students are using
glossaries to determine or clarify the
meaning of words.
Math
This week we reviewed money and
problem solving, and we have begun
our unit on measurement. In quarter 3
our learning will focus linear
measurement, time, and fractions as
part of geometry. Students have been
using base ten blocks and rulers to
measure the length of objects in
centimeter units. They have also
worked in groups to determine how
many centimeters it takes to make a
meter and use this knowledge to build
a meter stick for measuring longer
objects. Next, students will measure
in inches and determine relationships
between inches, feet, and yards.
Science
As we begin Quarter 3, the theme for
science is Earth and Space. Students will
begin a study of the sun, moon, and
stars. On Monday, students will bring
home a Moon Journal in which they are
asked to record their daily observations
of the moon. This project will progress
for the next several weeks. They will
record changes in the moon over time
and identify the phases of the moon. We
realize weather conditions may prevent
students from viewing the moon on some
evenings, therefore we are also including
websites as resources to record the
moon’s cycle.
Social Studies/Health
This week students have been identifying
food sources which supply our bodies with
six major nutrients: carbohydrates,
protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water.
In addition we have discussed the
importance of physical fitness.
