Testing Update
Formal mClass reading testing is in
progress for the winter benchmark.
Individually, students read leveled texts
and answer questions orally and in
writing to demonstrate understanding of
text and skills we’ve been covering.
Also this month, students will take the
midyear MAP-P exam, a computerized
multiple choice math assessment for
primary grades.
Math
Students have been working with money.
This is a topic you can reinforce easily at
home in many real-life situations.
(banking, grocery shopping, making
purchases, estimating totals, adding tax,
counting change) Students must be able
to determine collections of bills and coins
that equal a target value less than $100.
Also, students must be able to organize a
collection of bills and coins to determine
its value.
Health Week
Thank you to the parents involved in
making Health Week a big success at
Greenwood. Lots of second grader made
posters that are hanging around the
school building! In class we have been
reviewing appropriate responses to
emergency situations and rules to stay
safe on bikes and skates, on playground
equipment, in the water, and in the sun!
Science/Writing
Students have been identifying and
describing attributes of minute objects
(salt, rice, seeds, sand) as well as
describes similarities and differences
between objects. Students have been
using an “attribute wheel” as a graphic
organizer to record their observations.
From that organizer, students are
learning to expand these points into
sentences and write a descriptive
paragraph of a scientific observation.
Social Studies/Reading
We have been learning and describing
how people in a community of different
ages or cultural backgrounds help pass
on traditions and customs. Books such
as Grandma’s Records, Faith Ringgold,
and I Love Saturdays y Domingo help
illustrate how customs are shared
within families and communities.
Students have been making personal
connections to their own families, and
have designed a posters to describe
“The Culture of Me”!
