WEEKLY UPDATE Greenwood Elementary School Brookeville, MD 9/11/15 Second Grade Reading We have begun our Fall mClass testing. This formal assessment will help us to group students in reading. During reading instruction, we practiced the strategy of asking questions about key details in the text and then reading on to find answers to our questions. Also, we examined how characters’ feelings can change throughout a book and how the events in the story lead to a conclusion that solves a problem. Math Students identified patterns on a hundreds chart and extended those patterns through 200. Students began reading and writing 3-digit numbers and must be able to describe a 3-digit number as representing amounts of hundreds, tens, and ones. Social Studies In class we have begun studying the rights and responsibilities of good citizens. We are examining rules and laws. What is the difference and why do we need them? Students must be able to explain how rules and laws promote safety, fairness, orderliness, and responsibility. In addition, we are working collaboratively, understanding appropriate social skills, and building relationships by being Bucket Fillers not Bucket Dippers! Super Reader Homework Throughout the year, students will be assigned Super Reader homework. Students were introduced to the format on Tuesday with their first assignment coming home the same day.
