April 2016 “Specials” Newsletter Physical Education PreK: Students will practice traveling through space like a cloud. Students will cooperate and communicate with a partner while practicing cues for kicking. Students will respond appropriately to directions and demonstrate various forms of movement during play. Kindergarten: Students will practice striking lightweight objects with various body parts and throwing objects with underhand and overhand tosses. First Grade: Students will explore and distinguish between the components of fitness (muscular strength, cardiorespiratory endurance, and flexibility. In addition, students identify activities that improve muscular strength, cardiorespiratory, and flexibility. Sample learning tasks provide opportunities for students to recognize the importance of selfevaluation in the improvement of skills and that a person’s skill development results from prior experience, natural ability, and practice. Second Grade: Students will demonstrate proficiency in striking with body parts and implements. Kindergarten: Students will begin learning about museums, including what they are and how they’re organized. First Grade: Students will start their sharing our Earth inquiry project where they will learn what they can do to protect their environment and the Earth. Second Grade: Students will explore the lives of accomplished individuals using print and digital resources. Third Grade: Students will explore how writers organize ideas to show relationships by researching an issue and examining it from different points of view. With guidance and support, students select a topic that impacts the way people live, work, or play and for which there are differing points of view about the way the topic’s issue can be resolved. Fourth Grade : Students will choose a natural disaster and research this topic using both print and digital resources. Fifth Grade: Students will learn about various careers. They will then research an occupation of their choice to learn more about their their possible future career. Mrs. Savoy ( [email protected] ) Art Please come support Burnt Mills’ students at the annual MCPS Elementary and Middle School Arts Fair from April 19th24th at Lakeforest Mall in Gaithersburg. Some student artwork will be on display. PreK: Students identify colors, lines, and shapes that are found in the environment and represent ideas about nature visually from observation. Students Observe works of art and identify ideas expressed by different artists and use color, line, and shape to communicate what is observed in the sky. Kindergarten: Students create visual representations from observation, memory, and imagination and explore processes and techniques in various art forms. Opportunities for students to discover the communicative potential of art will inspire them to share ideas with others through the creation of art. First Grade: Students focus on form (threedimensional, organic, geometric). Additional opportunities for experimentation with material choices enable them to create artwork to better express thoughts and feelings. Second Grade : Students experiment with art media, processes, and techniques and demonstrate a variety of ways they can be used to represent physical qualities of people, animals, and objects. Students study how artists respond to what they see, know, and feel and are inspired by the work of other artists to create artworks with personal meaning. Third Grade: Students organize art elements and design principles to represent what is seen, felt, known, or imagined. This provides students with opportunities to explore the communication of ideas. Students represent ideas and feelings visually. Fourth Grade: Students analyze connections between processes used in visual art and other disciplines. Students are provided multiple opportunities to use processes from other content areas to create and discuss artwork. Students make connections between art and the world by examining relationships among what is observed and using processes from other disciplines to create artwork. Fifth Grade: Students explore how artists make connections to the world. This provides students with opportunities to better understand how artists develop their ideas and apply them in the creation of art. Students analyze how artists are influenced by the style and form of art from different times and places. This provides students the opportunity to adapt aspects art of other times and places in their artwork. Mr. Varno ( [email protected] ) Ms. Arias ( [email protected] ) Music PreK will move into exploring the environment of Nature. The musical coordination will include using their voice in various ways, using instruments to tell a story and moving to steady beat. Kindergarten K students will continue with Responding to music and Performing music. The concepts will include distinguishing high and low sounds, use of their singing voice in singing games and arranging music. First Grade Students will be using musical notation, in particular the quarter rest. They will be asked to try their hand at rhythmic dictation, vocal improvisation and identifying musical culture. Second Grade Students will be exploring musical oppositesloud/soft and fast and slow. The goal is to have them use the musical terminology correctly as well as understand the cultural background of the music they sing and study. Third Grade I am hoping everyone will be able to reach the green belt in Recorder Karate. Three students have earned their black belt and continue testing for double belts. Through the Recorder Karate program students will learn musical notation (dotted half note) as well as diverse musical styles. Fourth Grade Students will have the opportunity the conduct in the meter of 3.The will compose, notate and sing with appropriate expression. Additionally, 4th grades students will learn about harmonizing by singing 3 part rounds. Chorus members are beginning to polish and finalize their selections for the program May 17 (day) and 19 (evening). Fifth Grade Students will continue with music reading, notation and composition. The ‘graduation’ song is being prepared. Chorus members are finalizing their parts. Dr. Lively ( [email protected] ) Mr. Goba ( [email protected] ) Instrumental Music th All instrumental music students are preparing for our spring concert on May 19 . Students are now learning several new songs as well as new notes on their instrument and continuing to refine their musical expertise. Remember that all students should be practicing at least 150 minutes per week or more (30 minutes each day for 5 days a week) and parents should sign their child’s practice chart after each week has been totaled up. Remember, also to praise small improvements and help remind your child to bring their instrument on their lesson day (Monday or Tuesday)! Mr. Goba ( [email protected] )
