May 2016 “Specials” Newsletter Physical Education Field Day is Coming!!!! Friday, June 3rd, will be Fantastic, FunFilled Field day for all BMES students! Please be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities to come home in your child’s Wednesday folder during the month of May! During the month of May, all students will be learning about/reviewing good sportsmanship. In addition, students will be gearing up for field day by learning several different skills and games. Mrs. Rogers (J [email protected] ) Mr. O’Reilly ( [email protected] ) Media PreK : Students will begin their Clifford author study. Kindergarten: Students will continue learning about museums. They will use the computers to take virtual field trips to museums all around the United States. First Grade: Students will continue to learn about the Earth and what they can do to protect the environment. Second Grade: Students will continue to familiarize themselves with poetry. They will use their knowledge to create their own PowerPoint slideshow about their poem, which will include a voice recording. Third Grade: Students will continue researching an issue that impacts their life. They will use their research to create a newsletter emphasizing the differing points of view about the way their issue can be resolved. Fourth Grade : Students will choose a natural disaster and research this topic using both print and digital resources. They will use the information to create a Google slides presentation. Fifth Grade: Students will continue to learn about various careers in hopes that they might begin to decide upon their future occupation. Mrs. Savoy ( [email protected] ) Art PreK: Students explore how to organize and combine shape, line, and color to create original artworks with inspiration from the environment. Kindergarten: Students investigate a variety of ways that artists develop ideas and organize the elements of art in responding to what they see, know, and feel. Students will determine ways in which works of art express ideas about oneself, other people, places, and events. Students will classify reasons why people create and use art by studying artworks and other sources of information differentiate among works by artists representative of different times and cultures. First Grade: Students identify and observe observed physical qualities of people, animals, and objects in the environment and use art elements and design principles to represent their observations in artwork. Students experiment with pattern (repetition, center of interest) in the creation of artworks and identify reasons why artists create artworks. Second Grade : Students use shape, color, contrast, and pattern to create decorative designs. Students interpret works of art as inspiration to express ideas visually and verbally about people, places, and events. Third Grade: Students explore the communication of ideas. Students establish criteria for judging art and participate in the evaluation of art. Students continue to explore different art media and processes. Fourth Grade: Students examine how advancements in technology have impacted artwork. Throughout the marking period, students will discuss the aesthetic qualities of artwork. Students will establish and use criteria for judging artwork. Fifth Grade: Students take a closer look at the role that innovation plays in the creation of art. This is another opportunity for students to study art of different times and places to develop new ideas for creating art. Mr. Varno ( [email protected] ) Ms. Arias ( [email protected] ) Music PreK will begin to sing longer songs as well as song with wider range to increase vocal strength. Their movement activities will include finger plays and moving to music without verbal cues. Kindergarten K students will continue with Responding to music and Performing music. The concepts will include moving to, singing and reading high and low sounds and icons. They have opportunity to arranging sections of music to create something new. First Grade Students will be using musical notation to compose. They will reinforce pitch and training through singing games. Second Grade Students will continue with listening to music of various styles and cultures, writing music notation and creating new melodies. Third Grade We are moving along with Recorder Karate. Almost everyone has earned 1 and 2 belts. Students are coming at recess for extra help and a few students are making efforts to earn double belts. Fourth Grade Students will have the opportunity the conduct in the meter of 3.They will compose and perform some short rhythmic phrases. 4th grades students are continueing with harmonizing in 3 parts.Chorus members are working on stage deportment. The performances are May 17 (day) and 19 (evening). Fifth Grade Students in the process of preparing their‘graduation’ song. Meanhwhile, Chorus members are practicing solos and speeches.The performances are May 17 (day) and 19 (evening). Dr. Lively ( [email protected] ) Mr. Goba ( [email protected] ) Instrumental Music We are excited to have our upcoming Spring Concert coming up in a few weeks for all instrumental students including beginners this time. The concert will be on Tuesday, th th May 17 at 2:45 for the school and again two days later on Thursday, May 19 at 7pm for parents in our cafeteria. All students should arrive at Burnt Mills on concert night dressed in black pants or skirt with a white top and black shoes/socks. If your child does not have this than come as close to those colors as possible please. I look th forward to seeing all of you on Thursday, May 19 !
