Kindergarten September 2015 Newsletter Dear Parents Welcome, We were so excited to see all the new and old faces on the first day of school! Homework will start the first Wednesday of October. Homework goes home on Wednesdays and is returned every Monday. Students should start practicing the kindergarten sight words. Students should master at least two words each week. The sight words will be sent home in your child’s Wednesday folder. Read every day with your child, and write down the book you read on the Book Log in the Wednesday folder. Remember to sign the back of the Wednesday folder and write any comments if needed. The cafeteria is reminding parents that all breakfasts are free, but not all lunches are free. Parents must fill out and return a lunch form. A school notice of free, reduced, or regular priced lunch is sent back to parents. It is also important to keep up your child’s lunch account. This year after two unpaid lunch’s students will have a cheese sandwich instead of the ordered lunch. In September, students will practice and learn about print in reading. They’ll learn how to identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book. After hearing a story they will answer questions about key details, such as what happened at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Students will look at the pictures and print to describe how they go together. It is very important to read to your child daily or have your child read to you! Be sure to record every book on the Book Log provided in the Wednesday folder. They can win a free pizza and prize when they turn in the signed Book Log at the end of the month! In writing, students will draw, dictate, and write to help recall an experience. Students will use letter sounds to write down what they mean. For example, if writing about a bus, they might write- b (for bus). Students will learn what a noun and verb do in a sentence too. In mathematics, students will learn to read numerals (0 1 2 3 4 etc.), number words, and counting amounts 0-20, using one object to one number count. They will learn a new skill called subitizing. Subitizing means to recognize a group of objects without counting with sets from 0-6. Practice at home using beans or buttons. Arrange them in different spaces, so your child begins to recognize the “set”, in a variety of arrangements. (Think of a deck of cards, they always have the same spacing. Now arrange your set in different spaces.) Students will observe the weather and record patterns (sunny, cloudy, etc.) in science. They will talk about how the weather can change daily plans. They will also investigate the water cycle and learn to identify different types of clouds. In social studies students will learn about symbols and practices used in the United States of America. They will learn about people important to the American political system, like our current President Obama! Remember if you have concerns or if your child is having any kind of problem, please contact your child’s teacher. The teacher will schedule a conference with you to help solve the problem or concern. Teachers are teaching during the student day, this is why it’s important to call, email, or send a note to set up a conference about the problem. Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much! The Kindergarten Team
