Kindergarten October Newsletter Dear Parents, We were so excited to see so many of you at Back to School Night. Thank you for makin g it a success! Continue to practice the kindergarten sight words, about two words each week. Homework will start the first Wednesday of October. Homework goes home on Wednesdays and is returned on Tuesday’s. Read every day with your child, and write down the book you read on the Book Log that was sent home in the Wednesday folder. Please note that we will have a Pumpkin Patch come to our school on October 26. Each child in the school will get to pick out their own pumpkin. To help with this effort, we are collecting coins to help pay for the pumpkins. Please feel free to donate your spare change to our pumpkin patch. Students should bring their change to their teacher in a labeled envelope or zip lock bag. We will have a Harvest Party on Friday, October 30, from 2:30-3:30 please look for information from your child’s teacher about the party. During the month of October, students will be practice and learn all about print. They’ll learn how to identify the front cover, back cover, and title page of a book. After hearing a story they will answer questions about key details, like what happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story. Students will look at the pictures and print to describe how they go together. It is very important to read to your child daily or have your child read to you! Be sure to record every book on the Book Log provided in the Wednesday folder. They can win a free pizza and prize when they turn in the Book Log at the end of the month! In writing, students will draw, dictate and write to help recall an experience. To write, they’ll use letter sounds to write down what they mean. For example if writing about a bus, they might write- b (for bus). Students will learn what a noun and verb do in a sentence too. Our math study will be about reading numerals (0 1 2 3 4 etc.), number words, and counting amounts 0-20, using a one object to one number count. Students will learn a new skill called subitizing. Subitizing means to recognize a group of objects without counting, with sets from 0-6. Practice at home using beans or buttons. Arrange them in different spaces, so your child begins to recognize the “set”, in a variety of arrangements. (Think of a deck of cards, they always have the same spacing. Now arrange your set in different spaces.) For science students will observe the weather and record patterns (sunny, cloudy, etc.). They will talk about how the weather can change daily plans. Students will also investigate the water cycle and learn to identify different types of clouds. In social studies students will learn about symbols and practices used in the United States of America. They will learn about people important to the American political system, like our current President! Remember if you have concerns or your child is having any kind of problems, contact your child’s teacher. The teacher will set aside a conference time to help with the problem or concern. Teachers are teaching during the student day, this is why it’s important to call or send a note to set up a conference about the problem. Alone we can do so little, but together we can do so much!
