Birthday Celebrations Parents may bring in store bought cookies, cupcakes, small treats, etc… for students to share for birthday celebrations. Birthday celebrations are no longer than15 minutes at the end of the school day or during lunch. Reading Marking Period 1 Adventure Stories Tall Tales Informational Text Students will analyze elements from a story, make comparisons to characters, use key details to figure out the main idea, determine the theme, and understand tone of a story. Students will continue to seek other perspective from the classroom for ideas and collaboration in all marking periods. Marking Period 2 Informational Text Mysteries Reading Continued. Words Their Way Each student has a Spelling Journal Spelling is differentiated according to instructional levels using the Words Their Way program. Weekly spelling homework will encompass a variety of activities including, but not limited to: Write the definitions for each word. Creating Add a story using spelling words prefixes or suffixes to spelling words Write each spelling word in a complete sentence. Spelling test (Every other Friday) Reading/Math Groups Each teacher has three- four reading groups that are differentiated according to student’s ability and instructional levels. Math groups and are also grouped by ability, but are flexible. Writing Creating Original Adventure Story Creating an Original Myth Persuasive Writing on Energy Informational Writing on Movements in American History Informational Writing on Insects Informational Writing on Careers Opinionated Writing Homework Expectations Homework should be written in the student’s agenda book daily. Weekly spelling homework should be brought to school completed every Friday. Math homework should be brought in daily. Occasional homework in the content areas will be given. Students with missing homework will loose recess for the day and complete the assignment at that time. Reading Logs Students are to read for a total of 250 minutes per week(50 minutes per day). Students should record the book, genre, and pages read on their reading log. Please remember to sign their reading log.
