Highlights and events!!!
The second marking period is beginning with a great start! Students are working
harder and harder to prepare for middle school. In anticipation of middle school,
students are expected to write their homework inside of their student planners
every day. Please check-in with your child(ren) to make sure they are implementing
this procedure.
In reading, students focus a variety of informational text related to real life
mysteries. They will also compare text structure, analyze the text, summarize key
details that support two or more main ideas, as well as research information from
print and digital resources. In writing, students will continue to apply content
knowledge from Change in United States Government inquiry “Movement
Project” and create a final draft. They will revise their opinion piece and include
previous content knowledge learned from reading to support their point of view.
In math, we will extend and apply work with 1-digit divisors in Grade 4 to
divide 2- and 3-digit numbers by 2-digit multiples of ten in Grade 5
marking period 1 week 9. Students’ understanding of divis ion is based on
place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between
multiplication and division. Please practice these basic math facts with
your child(ren) at home. Students will also be introduced to adding and
subtracting fractions with unlike denominators. Fraction will continue in
MP3, so please ask your child about their understanding of fractions at
home.
In science, we are learning about electricity and how it works. We have been watching videos
about creating electricity as well as the different types of forms. We will conclude electricity by
creating an electrical circuit.
In social studies, students will be viewing and discussing historical documents, such as the
Declaration of Independence, the Bill of Rights, and U.S. Constitution that are the foundation of
our democracy. This ties in with their study/research of the different social movements.
