Highlights and events!!!

End of year parent planning meeting is April 21 st @ 4:15 in the staff conference room
•
The Spring Book Fair is April 11 th-13 th from 9:15-3:00. Parents may come and purchase
items for your child or your child’s classroom.
•
5 th grade class panoramic picture will be taken on April 28 th.
Reading: Students will continue to learn about graphic text by identifying characteristics of graphic
text and identify story structure. Students will explain the interactions between two or more events
and ideas in a historical text based on specific information in the text. Students will also summarize a
text using two or more main ideas supported by key details.
Writing: Students will create an original graphic novel. Students will engage in prewriting activities
where they will brainstorm narrative ideas and include elements of graphic novels (e.g., narration,
characters, plot, dialogue, tone, and multimedia) in their original novel.
Students will learn how to:



Reason about multiplying a fraction and a whole number.
Use models to divide a whole number by a unit fraction.
Reason about the relationship between multiplication and division
with unit fractions to interpret models.
Astronomy: Students will describe the impact of society on the development of space exploration as
well as observe and describe the stars and planets as seen through a telescope, unaided eye, binoculars
and technology.
Economy and Geography: Students will explore events that increased settlement in the region west of
the Appalachian Mountains and east of the Mississippi River. Students explore events that increased
settlement in the region west of the Mississippi River and east of the Pacific Ocean. Students also
examine the role of governmental decisions in territorial acquisitions .
IMPORTANT REMINDER— Please discuss the importance of appropriate bathroom use habits with
your child. We have noted a series of events with fifth graders that have involved graffiti in
bathroom stalls. Due to these incidences, 5 th grade teachers will now follow a stricter bathroom use
policy for students.
