Greetings from Ms. Loftus. I hope you hear about our fun and interesting Physical Education
lessons each week. During the 3rd Marking Period, all grades experiment, play, and learn
gymnastics. The MCPS Physical Education curriculum focus is on educational gymnastics vs.
“Olympic” gymnastics. That is, students rock, roll, transfer weight, and balance instead of
perform front handsprings, split leaps, etc.
All movement is based on scientific principles. What better way for children to learn science
than through play! The gymnastics unit highlights; base of support, center of gravity, center of
mass, muscle tension. I’ve attached a few documents (PDF version of Power point taken from
some of our lessons) to give you further insight. Also included are directions for DIY balance
toy! Have fun!
