STD/HIV/TB SECTION National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day 2016 Overview Minnesota AIDS Facts National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (NWGHAAD), held annually on March 10, hopes to raise awareness of the impact of HIV/AIDS on women and girls. As of Dec. 31, 2014, a total of 10,718 HIV and AIDS cases have been reported to the Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) since the epidemic began: Today, about one in four people living with HIV in the U.S. are women 13 or older. Only about half of women living with HIV are getting care, and only four in 10 of them have the virus under control. ▪ 1,880 (24 percent) were female cases ▪ 402 females have died How to Participate Organizations may wish to provide or host activities that can help raise awareness about HIV/AIDS within their communities: ▪ Articles/editorials/news releases in newspapers and newsletters ▪ Community forums or events on AIDS ▪ Rapid HIV testing opportunities at community locations and events ▪ Agency/clinic-based HIV testing for walk-ins arranged and scheduled ▪ Public exhibits to distribute HIV prevention education materials ▪ Community marches and rallies ▪ Social media, blogs and mobile text messaging used to promote NWGHAAD ▪ Dedicated agency Web pages for the observance ▪ Youth peer education performances at schools and public events ▪ Places of worship promote the observance ▪ Distribute NWGHAAD resources from National Women and Girls HIV/AIDS Awareness Day (http://www.womenshealth.gov/nwghaad) There is an estimated 7,988 persons living with HIV in Minnesota. Of this total: ▪ 1,880 (24 percent) were among females (includes those who have relocated to Minnesota) ▪ Among females living with HIV: 627 (33 percent) were African-born, 515 (27 percent) African-American, 459 (24 percent) white, 126 (7 percent) Latina, 53 (3 percent) American Indian, 45 (2 percent) Asian Pacific Islander, and 55 (3 percent) other ▪ Among females living with HIV: 73 percent were heterosexual, 3 percent injecting drug users, 1 percent perinatal, 10 percent no interview, and 14 percent unspecified 307 new HIV cases were reported in 2014. Of these cases: ▪ ▪ 73 (24 percent) cases among females Among the female cases, 44 percent were among African-born, 19 percent white, 22 percent African-American, 6 percent Latina, 3 percent American Indian, 1 percent Asian Pacific Islander, and 1 percent other.
