September 22, 2015
Dear Students and Families,
First, I must apologize that I did not notice the typos in my yesterday’s message to you. Please
note, school is closed for students and staff on Wednesday, September 23 rd and not
Wednesday, September 24th as previously written. Those beautiful, happy faces of children I
look forwarding to seeing will return on Thursday, September 24 th, not Thursday, September
25th.
This afternoon, we are sending home a Parent Resource on Understanding Reading Benchmarks
to each only or youngest in family students. This is to ensure that each family receives
one. These pamphlets show an example of each of the reading level texts with an explanation
of the expectation or learning at that level. I hope that this information will be useful to you as
you work and read with your child at home. Reading or listening to your child is proven to
improve reading ability and that is why Farmland asks for parents to spend twenty minutes a
night reading with their child. The greatest benefit is the time you get to spend
together. Thank you for partnering with us! Remember our motto: Together we can!
Farmland SGA is proud to announce that they raised $370.26 for Heavenly Hats. This fundraiser,
held last Friday, September 18th, was to benefit children with cancer by raising funds to
purchase hats for children who have lost their hair. If your child participated in this wonderful
event, please have them bring their hat with them to school on Friday, September 25th to have
a group picture taken for the yearbook. We were not able to do it last Friday as we wanted to
take the picture holding the sign announcing the amount of funds raised. If your child did not
participate, but would like to join us now, please have him or her bring a hat with a donation of
$1 or more and we can have our caring grow!
Next week, Farmland PTA is hosting our annual Book Fair. Students will have an opportunity to
visit the Book Fair during the week and families are also welcome. There are two evening Book
Fair visits scheduled for Tuesday, September 29th and Wednesday, September 30th. Staff will be
reading to children on that Wednesday evening between 6:00-7:00 pm. The PTA will be
sending out a schedule of staff who will be reading that evening. (Also, the PTA will be holding
their October PTA General Meeting on September 29th beginning at 7:00 pm in the Media
Center. The meeting will be followed by a guest speaker from the Montgomery County Police
Department. We hope you can attend!

would have included this Friday. Although I always want to keep you informed, I do not want to
overload you with Connect Ed messages.
