Mrs. Leighton

I was born and raised in New Haven, Connecticut. I attended Skidmore College where I majored in
Studio Art and later attended Tyler School of Art, Temple University where I received my Master of
Education degree in art education. Before starting my teaching career I worked for a non-profit
organization supervising the construction of schools in developing countries and coordinating a
community service programs for high school students. I have been teaching art for 20 years – 18 with
MCPS. My focus in art has been primarily in crafts – jewelry design, papermaking, book binding, and
textiles. I have always loved to travel and have been fortunate to be able to visit and live in wonderful
communities around the world. This has fueled my interest in multicultural art and my desire to instill in
my students an appreciation and understanding of diverse artists and art forms. My husband Ben is a PE
teacher with MCPS and we have twin boys who are 8 years old.
