Materials needed: Textbook –Realidades Level 1 Spanish/English Dictionary 1in binder, wide-ruled filler paper Purpose: This beginning level course introduces students to the Spanish language, as well as Hispanic cultures. The class initiates communication in Spanish using the four basic language skills of listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Spanish has a large amount of vocabulary and focuses on other elements such as present tense conjugation, an introduction to the past tense, and basic grammar. It is a great journey of discovery! Philosophy: Respect for your teacher and classmates at all times to create and promote an intellectually engaging environment to learn the Spanish language. Rules of Respect: Students are expected to adhere to the following RULES OF RESPECT. Good conduct and appropriate actions lead to success! I. RESPECT THE TEACHER Avoid talking while s/he is talking. Practice active listening. Carefully follow instructions. Always bring ALL materials to class. II. RESPECT YOURSELF Do ALL work and turn it in on time. Participate in class and study at home. Do your own work and let others do theirs. Pay attention to instruction. 2 III. RESPECT THE ROOM NO food or gum. NO cell phones. Pick up after yourself. Treat class materials with care. Leave desks neat and orderly. IV. RESPECT OTHERS Be courteous; use “por favor”, “gracias”, etc. Avoid using putdowns, bad language & rude remarks. Wait your turn to speak and don’t interrupt others. Avoid touching others or their things without their permission. Discipline: A parent conference will be scheduled if you misbehave and disturb the learning environment. The next step is to refer you to the Assistant Principal’s Office. Grading Scale: Tips for Success: Test and Projects 40%, Quizzes 10%, Classwork 25%, Warm-up 10%, Homework 15% Arrive to class each day, in dress code, with needed materials. Complete and turn in homework on the assigned due date. Ask about and complete make-up work according to teacher policy. Participate during class in a positive way: Respect. Seek tutorial help as soon as needed. Communicate with teacher about concerns or assistance. Study vocabulary and lessons outside of class daily. Keep your parents/guardians informed of grade, including progress report and report card. 3 Spanish 1 Year-at-Glance Unit Name 1st Semester 2nd Semester Unit 1: Welcome to the Spanish-Speaking World- At the end of the unit, learners should be able to use frequency expressions used in the classroom, be familiar with the Spanish sound system, pronunciation, alphabet, and the location and names of capitals of the Spanish-speaking countries and nationalities. Identify objects found in a classroom and talk about the calendar. Unit 2: Hello! How are you?- At the end of the unit, learners should be able to introduce themselves and others, exchange greetings, ask and respond to basic questions, communicate what hurts, identify body parts, and talk about colors. Unit 3: Getting to Know You – At the end of the unit, learners should be able to talk about themselves, their family unit and others; express likes and dislikes, and describe character traits. Describe general physical appearance. Unit 4: My Classes – At the end of the unit, learners should be able to discuss their schedule, talk about the order of classes, express what they have and don’t have, and tell when things happen (telling time). They should be able to describe their classes and teachers. Unit 5: My Family – At the end of the unit, learners should be able to discuss relationships, describe family members (physically, personality, and age) and compare them. They should be able to talk about pets, family member’s occupations, and whom they know Unit 6: My activities- At the end of the unit, learners should be able to discuss what they like and dislike to do at home, for the family and during their free time, when and how often they do things, and the sports they participate in. They should be able to talk about things they have to do, describe what they know and how well they can do it, and accept and decline invitations. Unit 7: My Neighborhood – At the end of the unit, learners should be able to say where they and others go, where places are, describe places in the neighborhood, why we need to go there, and give basic directions. Unit 8: My favorite food - At the end of the unit, learners should be able to express what kind of food they like or dislike eating and drinking for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. They should be able to describe different kinds of food. Unit 9: My favorite places to eat At the end of this unit, learners will be able to talk about their favorite places to eat. Learners should be able to order a meal in a restaurant, ask to have something brought to them, pay for their meal, make dining plans, invite someone to go out to eat, say who is coming with them. Unit 10: My wardrobe - At the end of the unit, learners should be able to describe what they wear, explain what they wear in different seasons or occasions, ask for and give prices of purchases, and distinguish between items near and far from them. They should be able to state preferences, wants, and opinions.
