Approval of the Minutes of the Meetings of March 7 and 21, 1990
The minutes of the meeting of March 7, 1990 were approved by unanimous
consent. The minutes of the meeting of March 21, distributed at the current
meeting, will be considered by the Committee at its meeting of April 18.
II.
Announcements
A.
Chair Madison thanked EPC member Kyoko Sato for serving as
Committee Chair during the latter half of the meeting of March 21.
B.
It was announced that the Faculty Senate, at its meeting of March 22, had
approved EPC' s proposed termination of the Air Force ROTC program on
campus.
C.
The following changes to the proposed Fall1990 Experimental courses
were announced:
1.
MUS 496D, Keyboard Sightreading, was changed to MUS 396G
(changed by the Committee to 296G during the current meeting: see
item ITI.3. under the School of the Arts).
2.
CAPS 196, First-Year Foundations, was changed to CHHS 196.
3.
LSRC 496T, Recreational Tourism, was changed to LSRC 496X.
4.
The request to change E E 396WEC, Women in Engineering and
Computer Science, to ENGR 396WEC was withdrawn by the School

Memoranda concerning Fall1990 Experimental course proposals
distributed after the current agenda was sent were announced: two
memoranda from EPC member Harvey Rich to Associate Dean
Philibosian and Associate Dean Navarro~ respectively; responses to
Committee questions and concerns regarding H EC 496C, CDEV 296A1
CHHS 196 and LSRC 496T distributed by Associate Dean Philibosian;
and the responses of Goteti Krishnamurty to questions and concerns
regarding HSCI 296A.

School of Communication, Health and Human Services (the vote for approval
of the previously approved Experimental courses is recorded at the end of the
School's curriculum):

CHHS 196 First Year Foundations (3 units at C-4): new course. Alyce
Blackmon, department of Home Economics, discussed the proposed course
with the Committee. The experimental nature of the course was stressed,
as was the need to improve the student retention rate of educational equity

students in the School. Further discussion dealt with the need to ascertain
whether the course, as proposed, would improve students' retention and
grade point averages. It was then
MSP to approve CHHS 196 as a new Experimental course, effective Fall
1990, for two offerings, with the understanding that the School of
Communication, Health and Human Services will submit an
evaluation component for the course when CHHS 196 is proposed
for subsequent offerings.

2.
CDEV 296A Interdisciplinary Themes in Child Development (3 units at
C-2): new course. It was agreed that the department would adopt a
modified course description as proposed in Committee member Penelope
Mercurio's March 22 memorandum to Dianne Philibosian. It was then
MSP to approve CDEV 296A, as modified at the current meeting, as a new
Experimental course, effective Fall1990.

H EC 496C Family Economics II (3 units at C-5): new course. Audrey Clark,
Chair of the department of Home Economics, distributed a memorandum
dated April4 from Gail Fonosch to Committee members in response to
questions and concerns raised regarding H EC 496C, and H EC 323, Family
Economics. After discussion, it was
MSP to approve H EC 496C as a new Experimental course, effective Fall
1990.

HSCI 296A Men's Health (3 units at C-4): new course. Discussion dealt
with the course outline, viewed by Committee members as lacking specificity. After further discussion, it was
MSF to approve HSCI 296A as a new Experimental course, effective Fall
1990.
(VOTE: 3 YES; 6 NO; 1 ABSTENTION)
It was the consensus of those who voted against the course that their vote
was not a vote against the study of mens' health per se, but against the lack
of clarification in the course outline provided for HSCI 296A.

of Chair Madison.) Discussion dealt with the lack of explanation in the
course outline of the cultural components included in the course, e.g.,
gender differences, and it was
MSP to approve JAPN 296A/ AC as new Experimental courses, effective
Fall1990, for one offering, with the understanding that the department of Foreign Languages and Literatures will provide the sociocultural component of the course in the revised course outline
before proposing the course for subsequent offerings.

SBS 196ABC Social Sciences Perspectives on a Multicultural Society (1 unit

requesting General Education credit (Section D, Social Sciences) for the
course. The word "on" in the course title was changed to "in." The
interdisciplinary nature of the course, given as the rationale for inclusion
in General Education Section D, is explained in the course justification as
follows: "Students will analyze and critique works by scholars and
researchers who have contributed to the understanding of the contemporary social, psychological and political issues facing a multicultural
society within historical, geographical and anthropological frameworks."
Following discussion, it was

1990; to approve SBS 196ABC for inclusion in General Education
