FEBRUARY 2016 VOL. 5 Deb Danielson [email protected] Counselor Corner SARGENT SHRIVER ES 301-929-4426 Valerie Palmer [email protected] Toy Hughes [email protected] February is Kindness Month DID YOU KNOW? Kindness (kid friendly)? Kindness is acting in a way that is friendly, helpful, and considerate. Kindness is often described as “The Golden Rule.” Counselor Tip for Students: Kind behavior has a ripple effect; people who are treated kindly treat others kindly. Here are some examples of kind acts: Write a note to your teacher thanking them for teaching you Help clean up trash that is on the floor in the cafeteria Share your class materials, like pencils or crayons if one of your classmates doesn’t have any Counselor Tip for Parents: Encourage kind behaviors at home and the community. Some examples of kindness are: Help your brother or sister with their homework Create cards for fire fighters thanking them for the work they perform in the community Assist your parents with making dinner Check out a book from the public library about kindness Studies show that people experience a "helper's high" when they do a good deed. This rush of endorphins creates a lasting sense of pride, well-being, and an enriched sense of belonging. It's reported that even small acts of kindness heighten our sense of well-being, increase energy, and give a wonderful feeling of optimism and self-worth. Additionally, there are a number of physical and mental health benefits that can be achieved by being kind. Altruistic actions trigger a release of the hormone oxytocin, which can significantly increase a person's level of happiness and reduce stress levels. Oxytocin also protects the heart by lowering blood pressure and reducing free radicals and inflammation, which incidentally speed up the aging process.
