Resources for Parents and Families: Ability Awareness (kid friendly)? Ability awareness is the understanding, acceptance, appreciation, and inclusion of people with disabilities or special needs. An example of a disability is deafness where a person cannot hear and uses sign language to communicate. Counselor Tip for Students: There are several ways that you can understand and help those with disabilities: Check out books from the media center about different disabilities Help a classmate who has a disability who is having difficulty with their classwork Create posters to display around school or your neighborhood about ability awareness. Counselor Tip for Parents: There are several ways you can encourage ways that your child can understand and help those with disabilities: Host a play date at your house for your child and one of their classmates who has a disability. Encourage your child to open the door at public places for people with physical disabilities. Use clear, respectful language when talking about someone with a disability.
