DID YOU KNOW?
Resources for Parents and
Families:
Ability Awareness (kid friendly)? Ability awareness is
the understanding, acceptance, appreciation, and
inclusion of people with disabilities or special needs. An
example of a disability is deafness where a person
cannot hear and uses sign language to communicate.
Counselor Tip for Students: There are several
ways that you can understand and help those with
disabilities:
 Check out books from the media center about
different disabilities
 Help a classmate who has a disability who is having
difficulty with their classwork
 Create posters to display around school or your
neighborhood about ability awareness.
Counselor Tip for Parents: There are several
ways you can encourage ways that your child can
understand and help those with disabilities:
 Host a play date at your house for your child
and one of their classmates who has a
disability.
 Encourage your child to open the door at public
places for people with physical disabilities.
 Use clear, respectful language when talking
about someone with a disability.
