Marian started taking private voice lessons. In 1939 Marian wanted to sing at the Constitution Hall in Washington D.C. but the owners did not let black singers preform. Lady Eleanor Roosevelt asked Marian to sing at the Lincoln Memorial instead. In the year of 1955, Marian became the first black person to sing at the Metropolitan Opera in New York. Marian Anderson singing at the Lincoln Memorial MARIAN ANDERSON AND ME Marian Anderson and I have both been persistent and wouldn’t let anything get in our way of achieving our goals. Marian Anderson was persistent and achieved her goal of becoming a famous singer. I was persistent and didn’t let anything get in my way when I achieved my goal of passing the swim test at my pool. MY ACCOMPLISHMENT My goal was to pass the swim test and this is how I achieved my goal. It all started one day at the pool. My parents wanted me to take the swim test so they did not have to take me into the deep end of the pool every time that I want and because I would be able to go on both the high dive and the low dive. I also wanted to pass the swim test but I was scared. One day at the pool my dad said that we were going to practice swimming laps and then practice treading water. Then one day I saw my friend, Abby, at the pool and she too, has not passed the swim test so I asked if she wanted to practice swimming laps and she said yes! After one lap we told our parents that we wanted to do the swim test together. So we did the test. Just after we got to the other part of the pool I noticed that a life guard was watching us. Let me tell you what strokes we did. I did back stroke and I think Abby did free style. After we passed the swimming part of the test a different life guard with a stop watch in her hand came over. She told us we needed to tread water for one minute. Then she said “ Get ready…get set…GO!” We started to tread water. After that minute we were exhausted but we managed to go over to where the life guards hang out and asked for the bracelets. Oh, when you get one of the bracelet it shows other people that you passed the test and you are allowed to go in the deep end by yourself and the you can go on both the high dive and the low dive. And that is how I achieved my goal and passed the swim test. CONCLUSION Will you work as hard as Marian Anderson and I did to achieve your goal? Will you be persistent?
