Who is your counselor?
What is the role of the
school counselor?
My role as the counselor involves
working with students, staff, and
parents to create and maintain a
safe, supportive school environment
that enhances student growth in the
following areas: academic,
social/emotional, and career
development.
Mrs. Silver
Hi! My name is Mrs. Silver and
I am thrilled to be returning for
my 3rd year here at Belmont. It
is also my 3rd year as a school
counselor. I grew up in
Montgomery County and went
to MCPS from kindergarten
through 12th grade. Before I
became a counselor, I was a
special education teacher for 4
years. I am so excited continue
to work with all of the
wonderful students at Belmont
ES. It is going to be a great
year!
The academic area covers
assisting students with
study/organizational skills and
helping students learn the skills and
attitudes necessary to become
successful students and lifelong
learners.
The area of personal/social
development includes helping
children with self-concept,
friendship, and social skills.
Career development may not
seem to be an immediate need for
elementary students, but
introducing the importance of longterm goals is vital to their success.
A goal of this area is to teach
students about the decision-making
process, so they will be better able
to make academic, social, and
career choices.
Program Delivery
Elementary counseling
services are delivered in the
following ways:
Classroom guidance lessons
focus on topics like bullying,
problem solving skills, academic
success, and character
education.
Small group counseling
to enhance social skills, anger
management, and selfconcept, as well as groups for
students dealing with special
topics such as grief/loss or
family separation.
Individual sessions can help
students express feelings or
concerns, work through difficult
situations and learn how to
make good choices.
Consultation with parents,
teachers, administrators,
and other professionals to
make sure that each child’s
needs are being met. Referrals
to community resources are
made as necessary.
