th
May/June 2016
LITERACY
Students will read informational
and technical text related to science
and music. They
will use inquiry to
determine
meaning of words
and to understand a variety of
informational text. Also, students
will examine two informational text
structures: problem/solution and
comparison text structure. From
these structures they will make
inferences based on text evidence.
Towards the end of the month,
students will explore literary
nonfiction by reading
autobiographies, biographies, and
memoirs. They will also summarize
text in their writing and use key
details to determine main idea.
WRITING
Our latest project will continue
with students developing ideas from
research. They will use peer
conferences to edit their writing for
complete sentences and sentence
fluency. Also, students will create
feature articles to share their
selected research topic. Towards
the end of the year, students will
write an opinion essay related to
their Perspectives in Science and
Social Studies Inquiry.
MATH
Students will apply and extend
strategies for
multiplying up to a
4-digit number by
two 2-digit
numbers. They will be expected to
flexibly apply and explain their
strategies based on understandings
of place value, properties of
operations, and the relationship
between multiplication and division.
Later in the month, students will
revisit the standard algorithms for
addition and subtraction. They will
apply their computational fluency to
solve a variety of word problems.
Also, students will assess the
reasonableness of answers using
mental computation and estimation
strategies.
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our next endeavor will be to
gather and analyze information
about the three regions
of Colonial America.
Students will determine
how power was
established in the Maryland colony
through proprietorship. They will
also discover how law was
established through the
development of the Maryland State
Charter and the Maryland State
Constitution. Additionally, students
will study the colonies in the
Southern regions to determine how
colonists adapted to and modified
the environment to meet their wants.
SCIENCE
Students will
explore fossils to
see how the fossils
of organisms provide insight into
their past. They will examine fossils
to learn about the plants, animals,
and environments of the Earth’s
surface from long ago. Towards the
end of the year, students will
develop working definitions of the
terms weathering, erosion, and
deposition. They will explore the
rapid and slow process of
weathering, erosion, and deposition
and how these processes change
the Earth’s surface.
PARCC TESTING
The PARCC reading tests will
take place on May 16
17, and 18. The
PARCC math tests
will take place on
May 19 and 23. Please make sure
your child receives plenty of sleep
the night before each test and a
good breakfast on the morning of
each test. Also, because of the
time- sensitive nature of these tests,
please make sure your child arrives
on time to school.
