March 2016
LITERACY
In March students will summarize
informational text using main ideas.
They will find key details and
paraphrase information presented in
diverse media as well. This will
involve integrating information from
two texts on the same topic and
making inferences based on the texts.
Students will read science content and
compare and contrast a firsthand and
secondhand account of the same
event. They will also explain how an
author and speaker use reasons and
evidence to support particular points.
In addition, students will explain
procedures in a technical text and
describe the structure of informational
text.
GO FOR THE GOLD!
multiplication and equal groups to
understand fractions as multiples of
unit fractions. They will multiply a
fraction by a whole number using
models, contexts, and reasoning.
These applications will help to
develop critical understandings of the
meaning of the operations with
fractions.
Students will also apply their
computational fluency to solve a
variety of word problems as well.
They will assess the reasonableness
of answers using mental computation
and rounding. Towards the end of the
quarter, they will solve problems
involving intervals of time, distances,
and mass.
Lastly, students will describe and
identify points, lines, and line
segments, including parallel and
perpendicular lines. They will identify
these geometric features in twodimensional figures. Their analysis of
the properties of two-dimensional
figures will include identifying and
drawing figures with lines of
symmetry.
WRITING
Our reading incentive program,
“Go for the Gold”, is in full swing.
The program will end on March 14,
2016. Please remind your child to
bring in the yellow calendar forms
on each due date.
MATH MATTERS
In March students will apply and
extend their understandings about
Students will soon finish their
media messages inquiry project on
responsible advertising. After
completion of the project, students
will examine characteristics of a
memoir and recall an event from their
life and reflect on that experience.
Then they will reflect on a personal
experience to compose a memoir.
This study of memoirs will continue
into the fourth quarter.
SOCIAL STUDIES
During this month we will finish
our study on immigration and the
early settlements. Our next focus will
be on Maryland’s society today.
Students will explore how Maryland’s
society is influenced by individuals
and groups. They will identify cultural
characteristics of groups of people in
Maryland by sharing family ancestry,
traditions, and customs. Students will
end the marking period by
determining how Maryland citizens
contribute to the common good.
SCIENCE
Students will soon bring together
concepts and topics in Earth Space
Sciences with Engineering &
Technology to observe, measure, and
communicate information regarding
weather patterns and conditions.
They will also expand their knowledge
of local seasonal weather conditions
by looking for and comparing patterns
and trends. This data will be collected
from their own weather observations
to other regions.
Have a wonderful March!
Sincerely,
The Fourth Grade Team
