LITERACY
In February we will focus on the
literary genre of fantasy. Our
particular focus will be on character
choices and how those choices can
reveal theme(s). Students will
examine figurative language, point
of view, and meanings of phrases.
Students will also study Greek and
Latin roots, as well as affixes.
These studies will aid in exploring
the meanings of words and common
idioms.

SCIENCE
MATH
Students are currently studying
fraction concepts. They will be
adding and subtracting fractions
using manipulative objects. These
objects will include Cuisenaire rods,
fraction circles, and pattern blocks.
Some math vocabulary to consider
using at home includes: fraction,
numerator, denominator, partition,
halves, fourths, and eighths.
We are currently continuing our
study of the physical sciences.
Students will be exploring,
discovering, and defining the
properties of matter as it exists in
three states: liquid, solid, and
gas. These studies will lead
students to an understanding of how
matter changes states.
VALENTINE PARTIES
SOCIAL STUDIES
Our reading incentive program,
“Go for the Gold”, is in full swing.
The program will end on March 14,
2016. Please remind your child to
bring in the yellow calendar forms
on each due date.
WRITING
Students will be exploring the
techniques authors use to persuade
readers. They will gather and

parties will begin at 2:15 and
conclude at the end of the school
day. Every child should bring a
valentine for each child in the class
if he/she decides to participate.
