oct 2015 2nd grade

Dear Parents,
October 2015
We’ve gotten a month of school under
our belts and we are in full swing!
Thank you to all who came to Back-toSchool Night and our Harvest
Happenings Curriculum Night! We
enjoyed seeing so many of you.
The first of three yearly reading assessments has been completed. We
use the information obtained from these assessments to help determine
your child’s reading level and specific reading components to be
addressed which may be related to fluency, accuracy or comprehension.
In the areas of reading/language arts we will be addressing the following:
 Explaining the relationships between and among story elements
(character, setting, events).
 Point of View of characters in a story.
 Ideas that help the characters solve a problem
 Ask and answer questions to demonstrate understanding of key
details
 Explain how specific images contribute to and clarify a text
 Identify the main topic of a multi-paragraph text
 Determine the meaning of words
 Using text features (e.g. bold print, charts, captions, table of
contents,) to better understand informational text.
 Writing to inform and researching information.
 Applying spelling skills in all subject areas using high frequency
words and taught spelling patterns.
In math we will be working on how to gather and organize data (with up to
four categories) and how to display it in a variety of ways. We will be
making and interpreting pictographs and bar graphs and determining the
scale to use in graph making. We will also continue our fact fluency as we
work on our addition and subtraction strategies including fact families,
make 10, counting up/back. Please help your child practice this at home
as well. It is the goal for all 2nd graders to know their facts within 20 by
memory by the end of the year.
In science students will complete learning about the water cycle and
move towards identifying and describing natural features found in
Maryland and on the ocean floor.
During social studies, the idea of democratic skills and the
responsibilities of being a good citizen continue. Students will explore
and analyze United States symbols and will then examine how choices
about rights and responsibilities affect self, family, school, and the
common good of the community.
Our annual open house will be on Monday, October 12, from 9:00 to 11:30.
Thank you to all parents who have volunteered to help out in the
classrooms and in the school. We couldn’t do it without you!
Parents often ask about how much help they should be giving their child
during homework. Your child should be able to complete the assignments
independently or with minimal assistance. Please let us know if your child
is having difficulty. Please review your child’s work for completeness and
accuracy. If you see mistakes it would be great if you took the time to
help your child to correct them so they can receive immediate feedback
and support. Thanks for reinforcing at home what we do in school!
Have a great month!
