Reading/Writing
During the month of May, we will be
administering the last mclass Reading
Assessment. Each child is tested
individually on their oral reading fluency
and on their written comprehension. The
end of the year instructional reading
level will be noted on their final report
card. This valuable information will be
passed on to the second grade team.
Reading on a daily basis over the summer
will help your child maintain their current
level!
Reading and writing instruction continues
during the testing window. We are
reading and writing informational texts.
The students will be writing an
informational piece about how humans
impact the environment. This will be
followed by an opinion piece that will
answer the question, how can I reduce my
impact on the environment? We will be
using different resources as we research
ways to protect the environment.

Science & Social Studies
In our current science unit we are
continuing to learn about the impact
humans have on the environment and
how children can help improve the
environment. This information will be
used in our writing pieces as well. We
have also learned about one important
form of energy, electricity. We are
finding out what it is, how we make it,
why we need it and the different forms
of electricity and ways we can use it
less to help our environment.

In social
studies we have been focusing
on communities and economics. We
have been learning about which jobs,
goods and services are necessary. We
will be exploring how transportation and
communication are important to our
communities.
Reminders to Students
Math
In math this marking period we will finish
up working with tens and ones to add two
digit numbers. Another measurement
topic we will work on during this marking
period is geometry. We will be describing
shapes and their attributes and breaking
them into equal parts to make halves and
quarters. Soon we will tell time to the
hour and half hour. Please help us with
this skill at home by practicing with both
digital and analog (clocks with hands)
clocks.
