Introduction
We have made it through the first half of the
school year and the blizzard of ’16! Quite an
accomplishment! Now onto the third marking
period and, hopefully, no more blizzards. The
Thinking and Academic Success Skills (TASS)
we will be focusing on in the third marking
period are Synthesis and Effort/Motivation
/Persistence. Read the attachments to see
how we will be using these in reading and
math.

Reading
During the month of February we will be
reading informational texts, by finding
information in both the text, illustrations and
using text features (captions, glossary, maps,
diagrams,…). Your child will also continue to
ask and answer questions about key details in
the books they are reading.
Math
In math, we are working on developing an
understanding of the meaning and
processes of measurement. Your child will
use non-standard units to measure objects
and order objects by length. When
measuring and comparing lengths, they will
apply foundational linear measurement
understandings about iteration (laying
multiple copies pf measurement unit endto-end without gaps or overlaps) and
transitivity (comparing lengths of two
objects indirectly using a third object as a
reference). These terms are for you, Grade
1 students are not responsible for the
names of these measurement concepts.
Writing
We will be doing informational writing as we
work on our Young Geographer’s Project.
Your child will be using shared research about
a place and writing a short informative piece
to answer the question: What is in a place?

Science & Social Studies
In Social Studies we use geographic tools,
maps and globes, to identify their place in
the world. We will also be identifying
human-made and natural features of a
place.
In Science we will examine and describe
Earth materials such as sand, soil and rocks
in order to identify features in the natural
environment that are not made by humans.
We will also be investigating and describing
how earth materials and natural features
may be changed naturally (Sun’s energy
dries mud, rain erodes a hill) and by
humans (humans divert water to form a
pond, bulldozers level a hill).
