Dear Parents and Guardians:
The fall season is upon us and the weather will be changing quickly. Our school’s HVAC system will be
switching from air conditioning to heat soon. Please make sure that your child is dressed for the cooler
temperatures. Change is constant and we teach students strategies to deal with change effectively. Embedded
in our Curriculum 2.0 are academic success skills. Academic success involves possessing attitudes and
behaviors that enable students to reach their full potential in academic settings. One of the skills is
effort/motivation/persistence. In the academic setting we need students working diligently and applying
effective strategies to achieve a goal or solve a problem; continuing in the face of obstacles and competing
pressures. This also applies to non-academic settings where students need to take risks, interact positively with
others and enhance their social awareness. A key goal for all MCPS students is for them to make constructive
and healthy decisions that promote hope, personal well-being, and social behavior. At home, please engage
your child in a discussion about effort/motivation/persistence and continue to communicate your high
expectations for their behavior and character. Our collaborative efforts will surely create positive results with
our student’s academic and social growth.

News That You Can Use:

October 2nd is an early release day. AM Pre-K will be dismissed at 10:50 AM. School is dismissed at
12:55 PM. The lunch schedule for students on an early release day is:
11:10- Grade 3; 11:20- Grade K; 11:40-Grade 4; 11:50- Grade 5; 12:10- Grade 1; 12:20- Grade 2

October 5th at 9:30 is the first Principal’s Coffee of the year. The topic will be the School Improvement
Plan and Title I. The meeting will be held in the All-Purpose Room.

On October 7th we will have our first Social/Emotional Learning Presentation and Community
Resources Fair at 6:30 PM in the gymnasium. Interpretation, childcare and refreshments will be
provided. The presentation will focus on life skills needed for academic success along with tips on
managing emotions, persistency, and getting along with others.

Are you looking for the most cost-effective way of boosting your child’s school performance? Then
please plan to attend the fall registration sessions for the George B. Thomas, Sr. Learning Centers, also
known as Saturday School. On-line registration has begun (http://www.saturdayschool.org/). The
registration fee is $70 or $40 for students who qualify for free or reduced-price meals. In-person
registration will be held on October 3, 2015, from 8:30 until 11:00 AM at all 12 Saturday School

Centers. Don’t forget to bring your report card for the first day of Saturday School. Brookhaven
students generally attend the centers at Wheaton HS, Kennedy HS, or Rockville HS. For further
information, please contact Saturday School at 301-320-6545 or visit their website at
www.saturdayschool.org.

After-school clubs will begin in October. After-school activities will run from 3:35 until 4:35 on
Tuesday and Thursday. The activity bus will leave school at 4:35 PM. When filling out participation
forms be sure to let us know your child’s transportation home. We will be adding to our after school
groups but for now we have ABC Mentoring (Mr. Kimber), Commonweal Tutoring, 1Up Handles
Soccer/Basketball (Outside Agency), Girls on The Run (no activity bus). We will be adding a First in
Math after school group for students by invitation only.

Estimados Padres y Tutores:
La temporada de otoño está cerca y el tiempo esta cambiando rápidamente. El Sistema de climatización de
nuestra escuela será cambiado de aire acondicionado a calefacción pronto. Por favor, asegúrese de que su hijo
se vista para las temperaturas más frescas. El cambio es constante y enseñamos a los estudiantes estrategias para
afrontar el cambio con eficacia. Incrustado en nuestro Curriculum 2.0 son habilidades de éxito académico. Éxito
académico implica poseer actitudes y comportamientos que permiten a los estudiantes a alcanzar su pleno
potencial en entornos académicos. Una de las habilidades es esfuerzo/motivación/persistencia. En el entorno
académico necesitamos estudiantes trabajando diligentemente y aplicando estrategias efectivas para alcanzar
una meta o resolver un problema; continuar ante obstáculos y presiones. Esto también se aplica a la
configuración no académicas donde los estudiantes deben asumir riesgos, interactuar positivamente con los
demás y reforzar su conciencia social. Un objetivo clave para todos los estudiantes de MCPS es para que ellos
puedan tomar decisiones constructivas y saludables que promuevan la esperanza, bienestar personal y
comportamiento social. En casa, por favor hable con su hijo sobre esfuerzo/motivación/persistencia y continúe
comunicando sus altas expectativas sobre su comportamiento y su carácter. Nuestros esfuerzos colaborativos
seguramente crearán resultados positivos con un crecimiento académico y social de nuestros alumnos.

Noticias que puede utilizar:

2 de octubre es un día de salida temprana. Pre Kinder de la mañana saldrá a las 10:50. La Escuela
saldrá a las 12:55. El horario de almuerzo para los estudiantes en un día de salida temprana es:
11:10- grado 3; 11:20- Kinder; 11:40- grado 4; 11:50- grado 5; 12:10- grado 1; 12:20- grado 2

5 de octubre a las 9:30 es el primer café con el director del año. El tema será el plan de mejoramiento
escolar y título I. La reunión se celebrará en la cafetería.

7 de octubre tendremos nuestra primera presentación de Aprendizaje Social/Emocional y Feria de
Recursos de la comunidad a las 6:30 de la tarde en el gimnasio. Se proveerá interpretación, cuidado de
niños y refrescos. La presentación se enfoca en las habilidades de vida necesarias para el éxito
académico junto con consejos para manejar las emociones, persistencia y el relacionándose con otros.

¿Busca la manera más rentable de aumentar el rendimiento escolar de su hijo? Entonces por favor
planeen asistir a las sesiones de registro del otoño de los centros de aprendizaje George B. Thomas, Sr.,
también conocido como escuela del sábado. La inscripción en línea ha comenzado
(http://www.saturdayschool.org/). La cuota de inscripción es de $70 o $40 para los estudiantes que
califiquen para el almuerzo gratis o precio reducido. El registro en persona se celebrará el 3 de octubre
de 2015, de 8:30 hasta 11:00 en todos los 12 centros de la escuela de sábado. No se olvide de traer su
