Dear Parents and Guardians:
School will be closed December 24th through January 1st. School will resume on Monday, January 4, 2016.
On behalf of the staff at Brookhaven, we wish you and your family happy holidays. Please make sure your
child reads twenty-five minutes or more daily over the break. "Reading should not be presented to children as a
chore or duty. It should be offered to them as a precious gift." — Children’s author Kate DiCamillo. If you are
still looking for holiday gifts, books make wonderful gifts. Books don’t require assembly or batteries and they
are easy to find. Consider giving the gift of time to read with your child. Reading with your child can create
lasting memories. The Friends of the Library bookstore on the lower level of the Wheaton Regional Library has
a wonderful selection of children’s books for as little as 50 cents. Taking time to go to the public library to
check out books is also a wonderful gift. For parents of fourth and fifth grade students, hopefully you have
received your parent report for the PARCC assessment. Our student performance indicates the rigorous
demands in literacy and math expected of them. This is surely a challenge for all of us as we prepare our third,
fourth and fifth grade students for this year’s PARCC assessment in May. I hope you enjoy the holidays with
family and friends and Happy New Year to all.

Estimados Padres y Tutores:
La escuela se cerrará el 24 de diciembre hasta el 1 de enero. La escuela se reanudará en lunes, 4 de enero de
2016. En nombre del personal de Brookhaven, les deseamos felices fiestas a usted y a su familia. Por favor,
asegúrese de que su hijo lee veinte y cinco minutos o más todos los días durante las vacaciones. “La lectura no
debe ser presentada a los niños como una tarea o un deber. Debe ofrecerse a ellos como un precioso regalo."—
dicho del autor infantil Kate DiCamillo. Si usted todavía está buscando regalos de Navidad, los libros hacen
regalos maravillosos. Los libros no requieren montaje ni baterías y son fáciles de encontrar. Considera dar el
regalo de tiempo para leer con su hijo. El leer con su niño puede crear memorias duraderas. Los amigos de la
biblioteca del nivel inferior de la Biblioteca Regional de Wheaton cuentan con una magnífica selección de
libros infantiles por tan poco como 50 centavos. Tomar el tiempo para ir a la biblioteca pública a sacar libros es
también un regalo maravilloso. Para los padres de los estudiantes de cuarto y quinto grado, que han recibido su
informe de la evaluación de PARCC. El rendimiento de los estudiantes indica las exigencias rigurosas en
alfabetización y matemáticas que se espera de ellos. Esto es seguramente un desafío para todos nosotros al
preparas nuestros estudiantes en tercer, cuarto y quinto grado para tomar los exámenes PARCC en mayo.
