Analysis of IDP/UDP/Final year projects of academic year 2013-2014
based on the database of online project submissions by Final Year students of BE
During the last academic year 12063 teams of 32535 students, who had done either IDP/UDP projects,
submitted their full reports at GTU project tracking system. Students from a total 106 engineering
colleges have submitted the data as a part of their academic process.
The analysis brings out the success of the GTU community in involving as many as
5199 industry mentors, at various stages of the project development, to help the
young teams. The Principals/ Directors, HODs and the faculty members have to
make efforts to continue the involvement of these 5199 industry mentors in the
departments and class-rooms, while making efforts to bring more mentors into
their College and Departments.
GREAT EFFORT FOR INNOVATION: As an academic requirement during 7th Semester to improve the
novelty of each IDP/UDP, final year project we had introduced PSAR (Patent Search and Analysis Report)
exercise. A total of 35,330 no of students submitted duly completed PSAR reports in this online project
tracking system at university. A total of 178756 no of patents from Indian patent office, US patent office,
European patent office and others were studied by the students. This is 1st of its kind achievement by
GTU across the nation. This makes GTU to be one of the most IP-literate affiliating-type universities in
the whole country.
To help students in drafting provisional patent filing (in some case detailed patent filing) GTU had
introduced a mechanism of mock PDE (Patent Drafting Exercise) where each team, after completion of
their 8th Semester project, went through a mock patent drafting process. We have got a huge response
across the colleges based on these interventions. A total of 11,028 teams of final year BE students have
submitted their thoroughly done PDE report in the online platform.
ANALYSIS: We have found that the average team size per team including IDP and UDP is nearly three.
From the data of faculty guides across all colleges, it has been found that on an average three teams
have been guided by each faculty member. Out of the total 12063 final year projects 5199 are IDP and
5647 are UDPs.

REQUIREMENT FROM EVERY FACULTY, HOD, PRINCIPAL/ DIRECTOR: All the colleges are required to see
that originality and novelty of THE Final Year projects is verified before the projects are accepted. One
good practice, being followed in some of the Colleges, is to invite experts from the industries and
academia, with expertise in the field related to the project, to validate the novelty and originality of the
projects. This may be done within a month of the start of the project so that a student may have time, if
he is asked to make the necessary changes.
The college authorities and faculty guides are supposed to initiate strong action if the project suffers
from plagiarism or if the project is found to be an exact repetition of an earlier project or if the project
has been taken from a third party directly.
