Circular
All the Principals and directors of the institutes affiliated to Gujarat Technological University
are hereby informed that the University has decided to allow meritorious students to study a
subject of his/her choice in place of electives already being offered by the university.
The final year students who have no backlog whatsoever and who want to study a subject
which is not being offered by GTU can choose a subject which can be considered in place of
one of the electives. However within their first week of start of semester, students will have
to put the proposals to HOD who will set up a committee of 3 persons, one of whom will be
the dean or his nominee. The committee will evaluate the capacity of the student to study the
subject on his/her own & whether the subject selected by him and the study he wants to do
can be considered as equivalent to the elective course which it would replace.
If the proposal is accepted the HOD would appoint a faculty member to supervisor & mentor
the self-study. The information about the accepted proposal and the faculty supervisor shall
be conveyed to the University the (exam & academic section) within the second week.
Students will have to register study & discuss with the supervisor their progress. He will also
have so regular upload material of his study on the website, which the university will provide.
The marking scheme for self-study will be the same as for the elective it replaces. The
progressive assessment; marks will be given by mentors ‘observation.
The end semester exam of the theory & the practical, if applicable, will be conducted by the
examiner appointed by the university. The exam will include a written part, practical/viva &
Practical component, if applicable.
