Circular
All the Directors and Principals of the institutes offering M.E. course/s are informed to follow below
mention guidelines for offering open electives in M.E. semester II.
1. If the institute is offering only one M.E. course, the open elective can be offered from any specialization
of B.E. branches offered at the institute provided the faculty members teaching the course must be
GTU-endorsed with minimum of two years of experience.
Example: If institute is offering only one M.E. course in Civil (Structure Engineering) and institute
offers B.E. in Mechanical Engineering, the institute can offer any of the open electives offered by
various specializations of ME Mechanical Engineering.
2. If the institute is offering more than one M.E. courses, open electives can be offered from any of the
other M.E. courses, provided that the subject is not offered as compulsory/elective/open elective course
by that M.E. course.
Example: If institute is offering M.E. in Mechanical (Thermal Engineering), Mechanical (IC Engines
and Automobile Engineering) and Civil (Structure Engineering), the open elective of Thermal
Engineering cannot be offered to the students of IC Engines and Automobile Engineering as they are
the same. However open elective of Structure engineering can be offered to the students of Thermal
Engineering and IC Engines and Automobile Engineering.
3. If the institute is offering more than one M.E. courses, open elective can also be offered from any
specialization of B.E. branches offered at the institute provided the faculty members teaching course
must be GTU-endorsed with minimum of two years of experience.
The above circular is issued as per the approval of Hon’ble Vice Chancellor on submission of Academic
Department dated 30th January 2015.
