LEADERSHIP AND

CROSS CULTURAL
WORK

THIS MOMENT
 Immigrants and refugees are a drain on our economy.
 I’m concerned that it could take up to 90 days for a
refugee to be screened. Couldn’t they be spreading
diseases in the interim?
 How come they get public assistance and free health
care but don’t have to pay taxes?
 Housing and services are limited – how can we keep
bringing in people who need more of these services?
THIS MOMENT
 How do we know that they aren’t terrorists?
 Should we be letting Muslims in at all?
 Why don’t we “help our own,” not immigrants or
refugees?
 Do they want to become American? Why don’t they
want to speak English?
 When they come here why can’t they dress like us? Why
do they have to have “special” prayer times and rooms?
THIS MOMENT
Will our culture
change?
Do they share our
values?
Why can’t we go back
to the way things
were?

LISTEN TO YOUR BODY
REFLECT
 What is a sight, a sound, a smell, or a flavor that makes you think of your
work with refugees and why?
 Describe a time when something happened to you that made you connect with
a refugee.
 Describe a time when you witnessed something with a refugee that felt totally
alien.
 Think about your own culture, what is something totally your culture?
 What is something that is totally “American” to you?
 Think of an ethnic group you work with. What is something that is totally
representative of that ethnic group?
 In your work with refugees, what is your most memorable experience?
SHARE THE LOAD
At your table,
ask each person
to choose a
question and
share that
response with
others at the
table.
