LEADERSHIP AND SELF-CARE IN CROSS CULTURAL WORK WHO AM I? AGENDA Presentation Individual Exercise Group Activity Communication Tools THIS MOMENT Immigrants and refugees are a drain on our economy. I’m concerned that it could take up to 90 days for a refugee to be screened. Couldn’t they be spreading diseases in the interim? How come they get public assistance and free health care but don’t have to pay taxes? Housing and services are limited – how can we keep bringing in people who need more of these services? THIS MOMENT How do we know that they aren’t terrorists? Should we be letting Muslims in at all? Why don’t we “help our own,” not immigrants or refugees? Do they want to become American? Why don’t they want to speak English? When they come here why can’t they dress like us? Why do they have to have “special” prayer times and rooms? THIS MOMENT Will our culture change? Do they share our values? Why can’t we go back to the way things were? THIS MOMENT THIS MOMENT THIS MOMENT THIS MOMENT THIS MOMENT THIS MOMENT IS OURS Listen to Your Body Reflect Share the Load Prepare a Good Message LISTEN TO YOUR BODY REFLECT What is a sight, a sound, a smell, or a flavor that makes you think of your work with refugees and why? Describe a time when something happened to you that made you connect with a refugee. Describe a time when you witnessed something with a refugee that felt totally alien. Think about your own culture, what is something totally your culture? What is something that is totally “American” to you? Think of an ethnic group you work with. What is something that is totally representative of that ethnic group? In your work with refugees, what is your most memorable experience?
