MERC FTE Calculation Accredited teaching programs applying for MERC Funding can apply the following formula to determine the FTE count for a clinical training facility. An FTE is defined as full-time equivalent (minimum of 2,080 hours, 52 weeks, or 260 work days). One person cannot exceed one FTE. Formula (Student/Resident * Weeks in Rotation) * Hours per Week = Clinical Training Hours / 2,080 = FTE Count Example: Hospital A Sponsoring Institution Abbott Northwestern Hospital Augsburg College University of MN, Academic Health Center University of MN, Academic Health Center Teaching Program Clinical Pharmacy Provider Type Pharmacy Residents Family Medicine Physician Assistants Nurse Practitioner General Practice Dentistry TOTAL Advanced Practice Nurse (APN) Dental Resident FTE Calculation 1 Resident @ 4 weeks @ 40 hrs/wk = 160 hrs / 2,080 =0 .08 FTE 1 Student @ 5 weeks @ 40 hrs/wk = 200 hrs / 2,080 = 0.10 FTE 1 Student @ 25 hrs = 25 hrs / 2,080 = 0.01 FTE 1 student @ 20 hrs/wk @ 5 wks = 100 hrs / 2,080 = 0.05 FTE 10 students @ 10 wks @ 40 hrs/wk = 4,000 hrs / 2,080 = 1.92 FTEs 4,485 hrs / 2,080 = 2.16 FTEs Round FTEs to two decimals – Consistent with Medicare Cost Report for Hospitals Training Facilities must host a total of 0.10 FTEs combined from all teaching programs/sponsors.
