Report
2st One Day Faculty Development Programme (FDP) on
“Patent Drafting Exercise (PDE)”
For Engineering Faculties of GTU
@ GTU Chandkheda Campus on 08.03.2014, Saturday
This year during VII semester, great efforts had been made by our students and faculties for
Patent Search & Analysis Report (PSAR) generation activity, our students have
successfully completed the PSAR activity. And within a period of 4 months more than
1,60,000 old patents have been studied by our 35,000 plus students. Because of this
massive activity the levels of understanding and awareness about IPR/Patent among all our
students and faculties have been raised to a very significant level.
To keep up the momentum of Intellectual Property (IP) awareness program, GIC further
plans to introduce the Patent Drafting Exercise (PDE) during Sem VIII. Gujarat
Technological University (GTU) aims to ask all students, who have developed an
innovative project, to prepare patent filing forms for filing a preliminary application in
India. In this activity every student has to assume that his project is innovative and
patentable and make mock patent draft. This activity is to be done by all team members
during final year.
To implement this PDE exercise successfully, GTU started a Faculty Development
Programme (FDP) series to train all our faculty members who have a basic knowledge
about patents or who have participated in our earlier FDP series. Under this series, GTU
had organized the 1 st FDP on “Patent Drafting Exercise (PDE)” for engineering faculties of
GTU at GTU Chandkheda Campus on Saturday, 15.02.2014. In this workshop more than
eighty faculties from different colleges participated. The report of the first FDP on PDE is
available at: http://www.gtu.ac.in/circulars/14Feb/28022014.pdf
Honb. Dr. Akshai K. Aggarwal, Vice Chancellor GTU, had conveyed his good wishes
for the programme, and sent a message for all faculties to increase level of innovative
projects at all colleges and asked them to create an innovative eco-system at the university.
Dr. Manish A. Rachchh, Associate Professor (Center for Pharmaceutical Studies & Drug
Delivery Technologies GTU), delivered a session on “Overview of Drafting & Filing of

Patent in India.” he had also delivered a session to explain about “All Patent Filing
Forms” by giving some case study explanations.
Mr. Amit Patel, Project Officer (IPR/Patents Gujarat Technological University), briefed all
participants about the GTU Innovation Council and various activities about the IPR/Patents
running at GTU. He also gave a session on “How to generate a report of PDE” and
explained about the need for implementing this activity and its importance. .

Feedback about the event/workshop from the participants:

As a representative of Universal College of Engineering & Technology, Day by Day GTU organize very
informative workshop like S4, S8, PSAR, PDE etc... For the student and faculty. It was very informative
workshop of PDE done by GTU and from that workshop faculty members will help students how to draft
patent and motivate them for innovations.
(Rakesh Bhavsar, Professor, Computer Engineering, Universal College of Engineering &Technology)

It’s very finely organized.
(Tejal Patel, Faculty, Mechanical, Hashmukh Goswami College of Engineering)

This FDP was very informative to me. I have heard that to get this kind of training programs worths
thousands of rupees, which you made free for us.
(Kalpesh C. Chheladiya, Faculty, Electronics & Communication, Dr. Subhash Technical Campus)

I am feeling that using this PDE exercise, our students can contribute to increase Global Innovation
Index (GII) of our country and also these type of activity give the vision for research activity to the
student.
(Mr. kunjan bhanderi, Faculty- Electrical Engineering, HJD institute of technical education and research)

We are thankful to GTU for organizing such a nice workshop arrangement and the information provided
by them. We are thankful to Dr. Akshay Agrawal for such initiative.
(Mr. Nirav J. Chauhan, Professor E.C. , Kalol Institute of Technology and Research Centre)

Workshop had good intensity of knowledge about patent filling and all of our basic query about patent
filling is now clear.
(Dhaval P Patel, Faculty- Mechanical Engineering, Gandhinagar Institute of Technology)

The PSAR and PDG initiatives taken by GTU are good enough to spread awareness among students and
faculty members regarding patent searching and patent drafting. However this will be more beneficial
to everyone if it is arranged in timely fashion with appropriate pre-planning.
(Kaustubh Vyas, Faculty - Electrical Engineering Venus International College of Technology)

I request you to hold more such kind of workshops. Also, if IT platform for PDE will be ready at earliest, It
would have been more useful to students.
(Pranav P Mehta, Faculty- Civil, Venus International College of Technology)
