Report of a workshop on Microcontroller Application in
Power Electronics and Automation
PROGRAM REPORT
Period: 06/04/15 to 10/04/15
Venue: Electrical Engineering Department, Government Engineering
College, Bharuch
Convener of Program: Prof. Prashant K Shah (Assistant Professor,
Electrical Department)
Gujarat Technological University organized one week Workshop on “Microcontroller
Application in Power Electronics and Automation” in collaboration with Electrical Engineering
Department of Government Engineering College, Bharuch during 06/04/15 to 10/04/15.The
workshop was aimed to enhance skills of the students and faculty members in an area of
Microcontrollers and its applications in Power Electronics and Automation which has a wide
spread industrial demand. Around 48 Students and 12 Faculty members have participated
actively in this workshop.
The workshop started with the Inaugural function at 10:00 AM on 06/04/15. Prof. R.N.Shukla,
Principal had given a welcome speech and encouraging words to all the participants. Prof. S.
R. Sharda, Head of the Electrical Department had also given speech relevant to workshop
topic. Prof. V.Y.Doshi, Program Advisor had given a motivational speech to the participants
attending this workshop.
Prof. Prashant K Shah, Program Convener gave an introductory and informatory speech about
the objective and scope of this workshop along with its program schedule. He also shared his
views on importance of technical activities in development of student carrier.
In his inaugural speech Prof.P.K.Shah welcomed Prof. Janak Patel (Associate Professor, SVNIT,
Surat and Key Note Speaker for Inaugural), Prof. R.N.Shukla (Principal of Government
Engineering College, Bharuch), Prof. S.R.Sharda (Head of the Electrical Department), Prof.
V.Y.Doshi (Program Advisor), Shri. Bakul Shah, Proprietor (Elcop Controls, Bharuch), Shri.
Abhinav Yadav (Gateforum, Vadodara), Student participants and Faculty members.
Prof. Janak Patel had given key note speech relevant to topic and grace the occasion. He
shared his views about how microcontrollers and its technologies are useful in global
competitive environment and encouraged all of us for conducting such programs of skill
development and knowledge enhancements.
The first session started at 11.00 AM by Prof. Janak Patel. He started with the introduction to
Microcontroller applications and its Architecture overview. The Second session started at 2.00
P.M by Prof. Jasmin Patel. He had delivered interesting session on Microcontroller
programming basics on Keyboard and GPIO. After the completing two demonstration session,
practical session was arranged in the Software Lab by Mr Elijah Toppo. He had explained basic
Embedded C programming techniques for 8051 Microcontrollers. He had also made students
aware with Interfacing of Microcontroller Development Board with desktop computer and
basic programming of microcontrollers.
Day 2
Prof. Jasmin Patel had taken session on PCA Timers and Programming. Mr. Elijah Toppo had
delivered second session on Power Electronics applications of Microcontrollers, PWM
generation, Pulse Width Measurements etc. Mr. Jaydeep Kathariya had demonstrated
Microcontroller based PWM generation, Pulse Width Measurements, Interfacing modules to
participants in laboratory.
Day 3
The first session started at 09.00 AM by Mr Manish Parmar from NISUS Microtech,
Ahmedabad on Automation applications and importance of skills in automation. He had
motivated the students for improving skills in highly demanded automation field. The Second
session was delivered by Prof. Janak Patel. He had discussed the concepts of basic Interfacing
techniques to participants. The Third session was again delivered by Prof. Janak Patel. He had
discussed the concepts of ADC and DAC Interfacing and Programming to participants.
After the completing two demonstration session, practical session was arranged in the
Software Lab by Mr. Jaydeep Kathariya who had demonstrated Microcontroller based drives
and ADC, DAC Interfacing modules to participants.
Day 4
Two Technical sessions were carried out by Experts from Elcop Controls, Bahruch followed by
Laboratory session on PLC and SCADA based application demonstratio at company premise of
Elcop controls. First session was taken by Shri. Bakul Shah, Proprietor, Elcop and Second
Session was taken by Mr. Avinash Patil. Mr. Bhavin R Patadia, Automation Engineer had
conducted Laboratory session during industrial visit at company premise. Students have
appreciated and enjoyed the industrial visit with practical demonstrations of industrial
projects and PLC based panels and drives.
Day 5
Two Technical sessions were carried out by Experts from Tatvamasi Automation, Surat
followed by Laboratory session on PLC ladder programming concepts. Mr. Pragnesh Vasaya,
Mr. Abhishek Varma and Mr. Rafiq Pirani had delivered three sessions on PLC, SCADA and its
programming.
The workshop was a great success and very well appreciated by participants and faculty
participants. The workshop came to end on 10/04/15 with a valedictory session with a
distribution of a certificate to participants. Mr Pragnesh Vasaya from Tatvamasi Automation
System, who was one of the invited guest and expert speaker on a given day for this workshop.
Overall this workshop was a great success and it had fulfilled its major objective of hands on
practice and skill improvement. Prof. Prashant K Shah (Convener of Program) had delivered
speech on overall gains and outcome of this workshop with thanking remarks to all.
