International Partnerships update May 2015 Victoria Shaw Assistant Head of International (Strategic Partnerships) Purpose of session • To introduce University’s partnership strategy • To update agents on current partnerships worldwide • To share information and gather feedback on best practice across sector Why is Sussex investing in international partnerships? To recruit high quality international students Recruitment partnerships To internationalise the student experience Study Abroad and exchange partnerships To enhance research quality Research partnerships To position the University globally and develop strategic alliances Institutional partnerships Recruitment partnerships • Current recruitment partners include Renmin (China), Mahidol (Thailand), Bellerby’s College (UK), Langara College (Canada) • New fund to support recruitment partnerships • Strategic approach, working with each school/cluster • Aim to develop large-scale partnerships in a small number of international markets • Models include 1+3, 2+2, 1+1, double/joint programmes and fee-paying Study Abroad Research partnerships Aim is to enhance research quality by: • Encouraging international collaboration • Developing critical mass • Access new sources of funding • Promoting the work of the centre globally • Providing access to policy makers, international organisations and industry • Developing early career researchers Research partnerships New International Research Partnerships and Networks Fund launched in 2014, funding two three-year programmes: Sussex Centre for Migration Research • ‘European / South East Asian Research Network on Migration’ • Partners: Mahidol (Thailand), with potential to include National University of Singapore and Humboldt University (Germany) Sussex Centre for America Studies • ‘Paris as an American City’ • Seven international partners, including Stanford and the University of Chicago Study Abroad and exchange partnerships • • • Sussex pioneered Study Abroad in the 1960s Now a target for 25% of Sussex students to study abroad Around 130 exchange partnerships globally, including: Hong Kong University National Taiwan University Georgetown University University of California University of Amsterdam Bocconi University Waseda University University of British Columbia Monash University Study Abroad and exchange partnerships Our Asian summer school programme will this year place 50 Sussex students at: • Hong Kong University of Science and Technology • Chinese University of Hong Kong • Renmin University of China • Pusan University • Korea University Institutional partners Target in the University’s Strategic Plan to develop ten strategic institutional partners by 2018 Emerging alliances partnerships for research and student/staff mobility with: • Mahidol University, Thailand • University of Ghana • University of Lagos • Chinese University of Hong Kong • Hong Kong University of Science and Technology • Renmin University of China • University of California, Santa Cruz • Cornell University • Bocconi University, Italy Mahidol University • Undergraduate exchange and summer placement • Articulation agreements and research collaboration in Life Sciences • Joint research programme in migration University of Ghana Memorandum of Understanding underpinning initiatives including: • Research and academic exchange between School of Education and Social Work and newly established College of Education • Summer School scholarship programme • Visiting lectures, most recently on strengthening African universities for economic transformation University of Ghana Sussex-Ghana partnership cited by Kofi Annan, former UN secretary general, at the African Higher Education Summit ‘I have long been a believer in the transformative power of education.
