Valentine’s Day is right around the corner! We will have a 5
Grade Party in the All
Purpose Room to celebrate. If you are interested in helping out with this event, please
nd
let Mrs. Bell know by Friday, January 22
. If you want to lead the volunteers for the
party, please let Mrs. Bell know that as well. Thanks in advance for your help to make
this party a fun time for our kids.
The students did well using a variety of strategies to multiply a whole number and a
fraction. They also did a great job on the MapM test. We are all very proud of their
effort and hard work! Next week we will look at multiplication as scaling or resizing by
comparing the size of a product to the size of one factor on the basis of the size of the
other factor, without performing the actual calculation. This is an important skill for
students to help determine the reasonableness of answers, develop a strong number
sense, and estimate products. Here is a video explaining this concept:

This week in reading the students participated in textual analysis of Easter Island
through close reading to summarize key details that support two or more main ideas
and to make inferences. They examined the cause and effect text structure of multiple
sources and explained how authors use reasons and evidence to support their points.

Book Reviews due 1/29
Students continued working with informative writing this week. We wrote compare and
contrast paragraphs on the history of tacos and hamburgers.

This week in social studies we discussed the 1
amendment. We compared the rights of
a child / student versus those of an adult. Students should understand that the rights of
a minor differ from those of an adult. Hopefully no open protests or petitions at home.
st
We debated and discussed scenarios related to the 1
amendment in order to better
nd
understand the basic rights of an American citizen. Next week we will discuss the 2
rd
and 3
Amendments. Expect more annoying Bill of Rights questions from your children
in the coming weeks. I have attached links that some might find useful in order to
prepare.
