Happy Holidays from the Gators! As we celebrate the holiday season, I believe it is important to focus on the gifts we are in each
other’s lives. This focus brings to mind the powerful quote, “That it’s not what you have, “it’s who you have. The people that
make up our community are extraordinary. We have students who are motivated, enthusiastic about learning, and focused on
becoming good people. We have a parent community that is supportive, encouraging, and proud of what Glenallan represents.
We have a staff that is committed to the excellence of every student and works incredibly hard to ensure this goal is fulfilled. Who
we have is what makes Glenallan extraordinary. The unity of the Glenallan community members is a driving force of student
success and a positive climate.
With the end of 2014, it is important we take a moment to reflect on what the year meant. The successful start to the second year
in our new building, creating a community school environment where parents are involved and have a voice in their child’s
education, and the integration of new and creative instruction that has our students highly engaged. Following winter break, we
will evaluate our goals that were constructed in the summer and determined how we can grow our successes as a school. Below
is the instructional focus for every Glenallan student, the goals from our school improvement plan and school security updates.
Instructional Focus: Students need knowledge, skills, language, and a positive, engaging learning environment to engage in
purposeful discourse across content areas. Through purposeful discourse and collaboration, students will build deeper
understanding and increase critical thinking skills.
School Improvement Goals:
• District Goal: All students at Glenallan Elementary School in grades K-2 will meet or exceed end of year benchmarks
on M-class reading assessments by the completion of the 2014 – 2015 school year.
• Glenallan Goal: All students at Glenallan Elementary School in grades K – 2 will increase their performance on the
MAP-P assessment by 15 points by the completion of the 2014 – 2015 school year.
• District: All students at Glenallan Elementary School will meet the 2014 – 2015 proficiency/advanced benchmarks on
the MAP-M/MAP-P
• All students at Glenallan Elementary will increase their performance on the MAP-r and MAP-M assessments by six
points by the completion of the 2014 – 2015 school year.
School Security Updates
• Effective immediately, Glenallan Elementary School has implemented an electronic visitor management system. This
system replaces the current paper/pencil sign-in logs for visitors. The new system requires that visitor’s driver’s license
be scanned, and those without identification will manually enter their information. All visitors will receive a badge to
wear while in the school building with the expectation of returning the badge before leaving the building. This new system
will enhance our security measures to ensure a safe and secure learning environment. Please contact me should you have
any questions.

Grade 2 News – Mrs. Navas, Mrs. Grotewold, Ms. Shider, Mrs. Treichler, Mrs. Genua, and Ms. Komara
Thanks to all families for your time spent meeting with teachers at conferences and cooking for our Family Potluck. We really
enjoyed getting to know you better! Please feel free to contact your child’s teacher with any questions. If you’d like to volunteer
to help your child’s teacher, let them know! In the past month, students have researched biomes such as the tundra, savannah, and
rainforest. In December, they will use the information they learned to rewrite a traditional folktale. Students will change the
setting of the folktale to the biome that they researched. This is a fun and engaging project! Ask your child about their story! In
math second graders are using place value strategies (thinking about tens and ones) to add and subtract. Please allow your child
to share their strategies and thinking with you at homework time! They are learning many different strategies and these may differ
from how you learned to add and subtract. If you have questions, encourage your child to explain their thinking to you!

Kindergarten News -Mrs. Frank, Mrs. Diallo, Mrs. Beckett, Mrs. Carbone, Ms. Miller, Ms. Ali, and Mrs. Wiz
Winter is on its way! Please make sure your kindergartener is dressed appropriately for the weather. The kids will go
to recess unless it’s below 32 degrees. Make sure kids have their coats, hats, and mittens labeled with their name. At
home please work with your child to put on and zipper their coats. This is a skill that helps them with becoming
independent. Also please check and empty your child’s folder every day. Our kindergarteners have been learning so
much. In reading we have been discussing characters’ emotions and retelling key details from a story. Students have
also been asking and answering questions about stories. We have been writing simple sentences with our kindergarten
sight words. Please continue to practice reading and spelling the kindergarten words. We will be starting a class book
on plants in December.
In math we have been measuring lengths and weights of objects. We have also been discussing counting strategies to
use while counting up to 20 objects. By the end of January the goal is for all students to count to 30. Please practice
counting and recognizing numbers 1-30 at home. In social studies we have been learning all about maps, landforms,
and human made features. We will be starting a science unit on plants in December. We have an exciting event coming
up. On December 23rd at 9:15am we will be having a family partnership event where we will be making gingerbread
men! More information will be sent out as the date gets closer. We look forward to seeing you!
Grade 1 News - Mrs. Correa, Mrs. Ralph, Mr. Cord, Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Hwang, and Mrs. Lozzi
The first graders had a great month of December and can’t wait to start back up strong when we come back from winter
break. Thank you to all the parents, guardians, and family members who were able to attend Glenallan’s reading night
and our Family Partnership event; building gingerbread houses. The month of January will begin M-Class testing again
and will help the Glenallan staff see progress in our students and identify various strategies we can implement to ensure
every child’s continued growth in reading. Reading each night and asking open ended questions will greatly benefit
each child with their reading growth! Also, please continue to focus on your child’s words of the week. These words
are frequently seen in our reading and often need to be memorized! With math we will continue to use multiple
strategies to solve various word problems and equations. Examples will be on your child’s homework for both you
and them to use for support. Try out multiple different strategies to solve the math problems! Asking your child to
read a word from your book, newspaper, or magazine or have them solve a simple math problem can have them feel
pride knowing they are helping you, and give you pride seeing them succeed. Our goals as teachers and guardians will
always be the same; help your child grow and succeed as much as possible. Let’s start off 2015 ready to learn!

Thank you for all of your continued support! Please continue to:
1. Check your child’s homework each day and encourage your child to do his/her best work.
2. Take interest in what your child is reading. Ask questions and provide opportunities for him/her to demonstrate
what they’ve learned from reading the text.
Multiplication and Division: Students are continuing to explore the relationship between multiplication and division.
Our goal is for students to explain their thinking, while solving problems using multiple strategies. If your child is
drawing pictures to represent equations, encourage them to use more efficient strategies. For example: If I know
6x2=12, I can double the product to find 6x4. 12 doubled is 24. In writing, students have been conducting research to
investigate how people have improved technologies to meet their wants and needs. Our third graders have already
selected a technology topic. Next they are recording facts, definitions, and information as evidence of how technology
has improved over time. The research will be used for both informative and opinion writing. Share with your child the
changes you’ve seen in technology since you were in elementary school. As always, please let us know if you have any
questions or concerns!

Grade 4 News -Mrs. Mayer, Mr. Sabia, Mrs. Walsh, and Mrs. Hubbard
The fourth grade team would like to thank you for attending parent-teacher conferences. Please contact your child’s teacher to
reschedule if you were unable to attend.
Reading — In the next few weeks we will be studying informational texts. We will focus on paraphrasing information to
determine the main idea of a text.
Please monitor your child’s reading at home. They should be reading for at least 25 minutes each night and recording what
they read on their reading log (due every Friday). Students should also be completing Words Their Way assignments each
night.
Math — Students will be learning different strategies to determine perimeter and area of shapes. They will extend their
multiplication skills previously learned in order to connect the area model of multiplication to the area model of geometry.
They will also learn how to apply the formulas to a variety of problems and find the area and perimeter of everyday objects.
It would benefit children to work towards mastery of their multiplication and division facts.
Writing — Students will begin researching a famous person, place, and animal. They will take notes, paraphrase, and write a
well-written paragraph for each based on the information they researched.
Science — We will learn about pollution and its effects on the environment.
Social Studies — We will be learning about economic topics such as specialization and opportunity costs.

• With the weather changing daily, please be sure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for outdoor recess.
Grade 5 News - Ms. Gottshall, Mrs. Billings, and Ms. DeFrehn
Can you believe the fifth graders only have 3 more quarters of being a Gator? The counselors from Lee Middle School will be
coming to Glenallan after the winter break to inform the students of the outstanding opportunities offered at our home middle
school, Lee. During the second quarter, students will be focusing on the Thinking and Academic Success Skills Synthesis and
Metacognition. Synthesis is the ability to put parts together to build understanding of a whole concept. For example, students
will analyze and discuss how chapter headings, titles, and events give clues to the origins of storytelling (myths) in various
cultures. We will also identify the parts of the plot in a mystery story, to form a prediction on the solution. Metacognition is
knowing and being aware of one’s own thinking and having the ability to monitor and evaluate one’s own thinking. The focus
in reading this month will be analyzing story structures, the point of view of various events during the Constitutional
Convention, and using Greek and Latin word parts with similar roots to develop vocabulary. In math, students will use
equations, rectangular arrays, or area models to divide a 4-digit number by a 2 digit number. Students will use strategies based
on place value, properties of operations, and the relationship between multiplication and division to estimate for solving

George B. Thomas Saturday School
The core program of the George B. Thomas, Sr.
Learning Academy, Saturday School offers tutoring
and mentoring in reading/language arts, mathematics,
and test-taking skills for students in grades 1-12. It takes
place Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at
Kennedy High School.
Family Reading Night
A big thank you to all that attended our 3nd annual
reading night and book swap. Over 200 students and
parents were in attendance. Students participated in
reading activities with their parents, heard from a wellknown author, and had the opportunity to select books
that interested them to take home.
Automated Cameras on MCPS School Buses
MCPS school buses are now equipped with
automated cameras that will capture images of
vehicles that pass school buses illegally. MCPS is
working with the Montgomery County Police
Department in this effort to enforce the
law that prohibits the passing of school buses that
are stopped to pick-up or discharge students. When
a violation is detected by the camera, and verified
by the police, a $125 ticket will be issued to the
owner of the vehicle. The program will start with
five cameras and will expand to 25 cameras over
the next several months.

Los Gators les desean Felices Fiestas! Al celebrar la temporada de vacaciones, creo que es importante concentrarse en los regalos
que representamos en las vidas de otros. Este enfoque trae a la mente un dicho muy fuerte, "que es no lo que tienes, sino a quien
tienes". Las personas que componen nuestra comunidad son extraordinarios. Tenemos estudiantes que están motivados,
entusiasmados por el aprendizaje y enfocados en ser buenas personas. Tenemos una comunidad de padres que apoyan, animan, y
orgullosos de lo que representa Glenallan. Contamos con un personal que está comprometido con la excelencia de cada estudiante

Ajustes de la Seguridad Escolar

El invierno está en camino! Por favor, asegúrese de que su estudiante de kindergarten está vestido apropiadamente para el clima.

Los estudiantes de primer grado tuvieron un gran mes de Diciembre y no pueden esperar para empezar cuando vuelvan de las
vacaciones de invierno. ¡Gracias a todos los padres, tutores y miembros de la familia que pudieron asistir a la lectura nocturna de
Glenallan y a nuestro evento de Alianza Familiar; construyendo casitas de jengibre. El mes de Enero se iniciará con una prueba
de M-Class nuevamente lo cual ayudará al personal de Glenallan a ver el progreso en nuestros estudiantes e identificar diversas
estrategias que podemos implementar para asegurar el crecimiento continuo de todos los niños en lectura. Leyendo cada noche y

Lectura - En las próximas semanas vamos a estudiar textos informativos. Nos concentraremos en interpretar información para
determinar la idea principal de un texto.
Por favor, supervise la lectura de su hijo en casa. Ellos deben leer por lo menos 25 minutos cada noche y registrar lo que leen
en su registro de lectura (se vence los Viernes). Los estudiantes también deben completar las Palabras Asignaciones cada
noche.
Matemáticas - Los estudiantes van a aprender diferentes estrategias para determinar el perímetro y el área de figuras. Se

¿Pueden creer que los alumnos de quinto grado sólo tienen 3 trimestres más de ser un Gator? Los consejeros de la escuela
secundaria de Lee vendrán a Glenallan después de las vacaciones de invierno para informar a los estudiantes de las excelentes
oportunidades que se ofrecen en nuestra escuela media Lee. Durante el segundo trimestre, los estudiantes se concentrarán en
habilidades de Síntesis y Reconocimiento. La síntesis es la capacidad de poner las piezas juntas para construir la comprensión
de un concepto general. Por ejemplo, los estudiantes analizarán y debatirán cómo títulos de los capítulos, eventos dan pistas
sobre los orígenes de la narración (mitos) en varias culturas. También vamos a identificar las partes del trama de una historia
de misterio, para formar una predicción sobre la solución. El Reconocimiento es conocer y ser consciente de su propio
pensamiento y que tiene la capacidad de monitorear y evaluar el propio pensamiento. El enfoque en la lectura de este mes será

de partes de las palabras griegas y latinas con raíces similares para desarrollar el vocabulario. En matemáticas, los estudiantes
utilizarán ecuaciones, matrices rectangulares, o modelos de área para dividir un número de 4 dígitos por un número de 2 dígitos.
Los estudiantes utilizarán estrategias basadas en el valor posicional, propiedades de las operaciones, y la relación entre la

Importantes fechas para los
Gators en Diciembre/Enero 2015
El programa de la Academia de Aprendizaje George B.
Thomas, ofrece tutoría, tutoría en lectura/artes del
lenguaje, matemáticas, y habilidades para tomar
exámenes para estudiantes en los grados 1-12. Se lleva
a cabo los Sábados por la mañana de 8:30-11 a.m. en
Kennedy High School.
Noche de Lectura Familiar
Un gran agradecimiento a todos los que asistieron
a nuestra 3ra noche anual de lectura y de
intercambio de libros. Más de 200 estudiantes y
padres de familia estuvieron presentes. Los
estudiantes participaron en actividades de lectura
con sus padres, oyeron a un autor bien conocido, y
tuvieron la oportunidad de seleccionar libros que
les interesaba para llevar a casa.

Cámaras Automáticas en los Buses Escolares
Los buses de MCPS están ahora equipados con
cámaras automáticas que capturarán imágenes de
vehículos que pasan buses escolares ilegalmente.
MCPS está trabajando con el Departamento de
Policía del Condado de Montgomery en obedecer
esta ley la cual prohíbe el paso a los autobuses
escolares que se detienen para recoger o dejar
estudiantes. Cuando una violación es detectada por
la cámara, y verificada por la policía, una multa de
125 dólares se mandará al propietario del vehículo.
El programa comenzará con cinco cámaras y se
expandirá a 25 cámaras en los próximos meses.

Las Cualidades Cuentan:
La Cualidad para el mes de Diciembre fue Bondad. El
personal identificó estudiantes que manifestaron el
respeto en la escuela, en la comunidad, y se mostró a
través de la instrucción.
