Dear Glenallan Families,
I hope that 2015 finds you in good spirits, good health, and excited for the opportunities that await our community. I am very
proud to share with you the recent Gallup Data that shows Glenallan continues to be one of the top schools in the entire county in
regards to student engagement and student hope. This data is a survey of our 5th grade students last year and our 5th grade students
this year. Below is the student engagement data from last school year, this school year, the score for MCPS, and the score for
the nation.
Student Engagement is defined as the involvement in and enthusiasm for school, the reflection of how well students are known
and how often they have the opportunity to do what they do best. These scores are out of 5.0 and demonstrate that the Glenallan
students are highly engaged and committed to academic success.

As you know, the Glenallan community focuses on ensuring that our students feel motivated, confident, and that they are cared
for at home and at school. There is a direct connection between engagement and hope and academic success. I am proud to share
that we see evidence of this connection every day. We will be reviewing this data with students, parents, and teachers to identify
how we can continue to grow and get even better. Please join me in celebrating what I believe is the most important thing a

Kindergarten News -Mrs. Frank, Mrs. Diallo, Mrs. Beckett, Mrs. Carbone, Ms. Miller, Ms. Ali, and Mrs. Wiz
We hope everyone enjoyed their winter break! Thanks to all the parents who came to help make our gingerbread men!
In reading we have been reading non-fiction books about animal life cycles. This goes along nicely with our science unit on life
cycles. The kindergarteners will be receiving mealworms this month. They will get a chance to see how the mealworm changes
into a darkling beetle.
In writing we wrote a class book on plants. Students have been writing sentences with our kindergarten sight words. Please
continue to practice reading and spelling the kindergarten words.
In math we are working on decomposing and composing numbers. We are taking numbers and breaking them down into parts.
For example, the number 6 could be broken down into many ways such 3 and 3, 4 and 2, 1 and 5, 6 and 0. We are also identifying
and describing 2D and 3D shapes.
Please remember to read to your child every night. Also please check and empty their folders every day. Remember to keep
bundling up your child during the winter. Thanks for your support!
Grade 1 News - Mrs. Correa, Mrs. Ralph, Mr. Cord, Ms. Rodriguez, Ms. Hwang, and Mrs. Lozzi
The first graders had a great month of December and can’t wait to start back up strong when we come back from winter break.
Thank you to all the parents, guardians, and family members who were able to attend Glenallan’s reading night and our Family
Partnership event; building gingerbread houses. The month of January will begin M-Class testing again and will help the
Glenallan staff see progress in our students and identify various strategies we can implement to ensure every child’s continued
growth in reading. Reading each night and asking open ended questions will greatly benefit each child with their reading growth!
Also, please continue to focus on your child’s words of the week. These words are frequently seen in our reading and often need
to be memorized! With math we will continue to use multiple strategies to solve various word problems and equations. Examples
will be on your child’s homework for both you and them to use for support. Try out multiple different strategies to solve the math
problems! Asking your child to read a word from your book, newspaper, or magazine or have them solve a simple math problem
can have them feel pride knowing they are helping you, and give you pride seeing them succeed. Our goals as teachers and
guardians will always be the same; help your child grow and succeed as much as possible. Let’s start off 2015 ready to learn!
Improve Reading Comprehension – Here are five tips to improve reading
comprehension in your early reader:
Have him read aloud. This forces him to go slower, which gives him more time to process what he reads, which improves
reading comprehension. Plus, he's not only seeing the words, he's hearing them, too. You can also take turns reading aloud.
Provide the right kinds of books. Make sure your child gets lots of practice reading books that aren't too hard. She should
recognize at least 90 percent of the words without any help. Stopping any more often than that to figure out a word makes it
tough for her to focus on the overall meaning of the story.
Reread to build fluency. To gain meaning from text and encourage reading comprehension, your child needs to read quickly
and smoothly - a skill known as fluency. By the beginning of 3rd grade, for example, your child should be able to read 90 words
a minute. Rereading familiar, simple books gives your child practice at decoding words quickly, so she'll become more fluent
in her reading comprehension.
Supplement class reading. If your child's class is studying a particular theme, look for easy-to-read books or magazines on the
topic. Some prior knowledge will help her make her way through tougher classroom texts and promote reading comprehension.
Talk about what he's reading. This "verbal processing" helps him remember and think through the themes of the book. Ask
questions before, during, and after a session to encourage reading comprehension. For example:

Grade 3 - Ms. Nansimbi, Ms. Edhegard, Mrs. Ghee, and Ms. Davies
Thank you for all of your continued support! We hope you had a wonderful holiday! As we get ready to begin the 3rd Marking
Period of school, our supplies are starting to run low. We would love for any donations of pencils and tissues. In math, the
students are beginning to learn about fractions. We will be using some of the strategies we have already learned to help us
with this area of study. Please continue to practice the multiplication and addition strategies they have learned. We will
continue practicing reading comprehensions strategies and begin writing a realistic fiction book. Students will publish and
share their stories at a breakfast which will be later in the marking period. In science we are looking at different insulators and
conductors of heating and cooling. The students are looking forward to designing lunch boxes and testing their effectiveness!

Grade 4 News -Mrs. Mayer, Mr. Sabia, Mrs. Walsh, and Mrs. Hubbard
Our New Year has gotten off to a great start! Just like setting a New Year’s Resolution this would be a good time to have your
child reflect on their academic progress and update their goal(s) for the second part of the year.
 Reading — In the next few weeks we will be studying myths and fantasies. Students will examine characteristics of
myths and fantasies and identify the relationship between characters and setting using details from the text. They will
summarize a text to determine the theme. They will also compare similar themes and topics within literature. Please
monitor your child’s reading at home. They should be reading for at least 25 minutes each night. After reading
have your child record what they read on their reading log and complete the “Book Recommendation” on the back
(due Friday).
 Math — Students will identify equivalent fractions. They will also compare fractions with different numerators and
denominators. Please continue to have your child work towards building mastery of all their basic facts: addition,
subtraction, multiplication, and division. This will contribute to their full understanding of fractions, as well as their
success in all areas of math.
 Writing — Students will examine advertisements and evaluate how they influence consumers.
 Science/Social Studies — We will study different aspects of the weather and the establishments of our first settlements in
North America.
 Special Events and Reminders:
 Look for information in your child’s binder about our Valentine’s Day parties on Friday, February 14th. Family
members are welcome to join us!
 With the weather changing daily, please be sure your child comes to school dressed appropriately for outdoor recess.
Grade 5 News - Ms. Gottshall, Mrs. Billings, and Ms. DeFrehn
It’s hard to believe that it’s time to say good bye to 2014! Between field trips, assemblies and tons of learning, it has been a
busy year for your students! It’s time to take the jackets and sweaters out of the closet because winter seems to be on its way.
Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather since they will be going outside for recess.
We continue to use our Google Chrome books in all areas of instruction. Both teachers and students love using the technology
to enhance learning! In writing, we are currently in the middle of exploring a movement in American history. The students
are working on gathering research on their chosen movements. We will use the information gathered to write a well-researched
informational paper. We started reading the novel The Invention of Hugo Cabret and looking at how the lives of real people
can have such a huge impact on others!
We are picking up speed in our study of fractions. We are continuing to build on your child’s understanding of equivalent
fractions in order to add, subtract, multiply and divide fractions. We are learning new and exciting ways to solve equations.
We know some of these strategies might surprise and interest those parents who learned a different way, so please let us know
if you need additional resources to help your child. This is a great opportunity to let your child be the teacher, and show you
how they are learning to understand fractions. All the fifth grade teachers continue to be impressed with the caliber of students
that we have in the 5th grade. We are almost half way done with the school year and have accomplished so much already. We
look forward to accomplishing so much more in the upcoming year! Thank you for your continued support and all the 5th grade

George B. Thomas Saturday School
The core program of the George B. Thomas, Sr.
Learning Academy, Saturday School offers tutoring
and mentoring in reading/language arts, mathematics,
and test-taking skills for students in grades 1-12. It takes
place Saturday mornings from 8:30 to 11 a.m. at
Kennedy High School.
2015–2016 School Calendar
The Board of Education has set the school year
calendar for 2015–2016. The school year will
begin on Monday, August 31, 2015, and is
scheduled to end on Friday, June 17, 2016. Spring
break will run from March 25 to April 1. Schools
and offices also will be closed on April 5, 2016, for
primary election day. The calendar was developed
in partnership with the Montgomery County
Council of PTAs, the school district’s three
employee associations, and the Montgomery
County Region of the Maryland Association of
Student Councils, as well as other community
members and school system leadership.
MCPS Teacher Workforce Diversity Initiative
MCPS has launched a new initiative to increase the
diversity of its teacher workforce. The school
system is seeking to recruit and retain high-quality
teachers who reflect the diversity of its student
enrollment, including teachers of color and others
with backgrounds, skills, and experiences that are
underrepresented in the current workforce, such as
those who are multilingual. The initiative, which
was developed in collaboration with the
Montgomery County Education Association
(MCEA), SEIU Local 500, and the Montgomery
County Association of Administrators and
Principals, includes strategies in four key areas—
recruitment, selection, retention, and internal talent
development.

de jengibre! En la lectura hemos estado leyendo libros de no ficción sobre los ciclos de vida animales. Esto va con nuestra unidad
de la ciencia de los ciclos de vida. El Kinder recibirán gusanos de la harina de este mes. Tendrán la oportunidad de ver cómo el
gusano de la harina se transforma en un Escarabajo oscuro.
En la escritura, escribimos un libro de clase en las plantas. Los estudiantes han estado escribiendo oraciones con palabras de

Los niños de primer grado tuvieron un gran mes de diciembre y no pueden esperar para iniciar fuerte cuando regresamos de las

la escritura, actualmente estamos en medio de la exploración de un movimiento en la historia estadounidense. Los estudiantes
están trabajando en la recopilación de investigaciones sobre los movimientos de sus elegidos. Utilizaremos la información
recopilada para escribir un papel informativo bien investigado. Comenzamos a leer la novela The Invention of Hugo Cabret y
mirando cómo las vidas de la gente pueden tener un enorme impacto en otras.
Nos estamos apurando con el estudio de fracciones. Seguimos construyendo la comprensión de su hijo de fracciones
equivalentes con el fin de añadir, restar, multiplicar y dividir fracciones. Estamos aprendiendo nuevas y emocionantes maneras
de resolver ecuaciones. Sabemos que algunas de estas estrategias podrían sorprender aquellos padres que aprendieron una
forma diferente, así que por favor, háganos saber si necesita recursos adicionales para ayudar a su hijo. Esta es una gran
oportunidad para que su hijo sea el maestro y muestre cómo aprende a entender las fracciones. Todos los maestros de quinto

George B. Thomas Saturday School

2015–2016 Calendario Escolar
La consejo de educación ha establecido el
calendario del año escolar para 2015-2016. El año
escolar comenzará en lunes, 31 de agosto de 2015
y está programado para terminar en viernes, 17 de
junio de 2016. Vacaciones de primavera se
desarrollará del 25 de marzo al 1 de abril. Las
escuelas y oficinas también estará cerradas el 05 de
abril de 2016, para el día de las elecciones
primarias. El calendario fue desarrollado en
colaboración con el Consejo del Condado de
Montgomery de PTAs, tres asociaciones de
empleados del distrito escolar y la región del
Condado de Montgomery de la Asociación
Maryland de consejos estudiantiles, así como otros
miembros de la comunidad y liderazgo de sistema
escolar.
MCPS Iniciativa de diversidad de mano de obra
maestra MCPS ha lanzado una nueva iniciativa
