Principal’s Message
Dear Georgian Forest Families,
I would like to start by thanking all the parents who attended this month’s “Principal’s
Coffee”. Our topic that day was “Bullying” and I know that this issue, as well as others
discussed during previous “Principal’s Coffees”, is very important to Georgian Forest
families. Given that these types of events are generally held during the morning hours
and with the idea of affording all GFES parents the opportunity to participate in these
gatherings, we will be re-presenting our topics during the monthly PTA meetings that
take place in the evening. Our goal is to have as much parent involvement as
possible and therefore, we think it is important to offer two separate opportunities for
our families to join us. As always, please do not hesitate to contact me if there is a
specific topic you would like to see addressed during these gatherings.
On a separate note, March is Read Across America Month! In order to celebrate the
fun and the importance of reading our students have participated in many creative
and enjoyable activities this month. We started off with our Dr. Seuss Spirit Week
during which the students came in dressed everyday in a specific way that related to
a Dr. Seuss book. Then we had a Door Decorating Contest, where each classroom
decorated their room door in a way that highlighted a Dr. Seuss book or character;
make sure to view the list of winners in the miscellaneous section of this newsletter.
Lastly, the students are participating in the Grizzly Reading Road Trip; each class
logs the number of minutes their students read, and the classrooms with the most
minutes will win. We will have a K/1, 2/3 and 4/5 winner for a total of three winning
classes. The winning classes get to duct tape Mr. Fine and me to the wall! As you can
see, we go to great lengths to get our students to read, so remember to encourage
your child to continue reading during the upcoming Spring Break!
I would also like to take this opportunity to remind parents to not block the exit of our
parking area when they come to drop off or pickup their children. Please make sure to
park in designated areas only in order to ensure that you do not impede the passage
of other cars.
Lastly, and in order to keep GFES families updated about what is happening at
MCPS, attached please find information regarding programs and events that are
taking place within the global school community, Please do not hesitate to contact me
with any questions and/or concerns you may have related to this information.

Queridas Familias de Georgian Forest,
Quiero empezar dándoles las gracias a todas las familias que asistieron al “Café con la
Directora” que se hizo este mes. El tema de ese día fue el acoso o “Bullying” y se que este
tema, como muchos otros que hemos discutidos durante previos “Cafés con la Directora” , es
muy importante para las familias de Georgian Forest. Dado que este tipo de eventos se
realizan generalmente durante las horas de la mañana, y con la idea de ofrecerles a todos los
padres de GFES la oportunidad de participar en este tipo de encuentros , volveremos a
presentar estos temas durante las reuniones de la Asociación de Padres y Maestros (PTA)
que se llevan a cabo por la noche. Nuestra meta es obtener la mayor participación de los
padres posible, y por lo tanto, nos parece importante ofrecer dos distintas oportunidades a las
familias de acompañarnos. Como siempre, por favor no duden en comunicarse conmigo si hay
un tema especifico que quisieran que se tocara durante los próximos eventos.
Por otra parte, marzo es el mes de Leer a través de América! Con el fin de celebrar lo divertido
y lo importante que es leer, nuestros estudiantes han estado participando en muchas
actividades creativas y divertidas durante este mes. Arrancamos con la Semana de Espíritu del
Dr. Seuss, durante el cual los estudiantes vinieron a la escuela todos los días vestidos de una
manera especifica relacionada con un libro del Dr. Seuss. Después hicimos un concurso donde
los estudiantes decoraron la puerta de su salón de una manera que resaltaba un libro o un
personaje creado por el Dr. Seuss; asegúrense de mirar la lista de ganadores que esta en la
Sección de Misceláneos de este boletín. Por ultimo, los estudiantes están participando en el
Viaje de Lectura de los Grizzlies; cada clase registra la cantidad de minutos que sus
estudiantes leen y las clases con la mayor cantidad de tiempo ganarán! Tendremos un salón
ganador de K/1, otro de 2/3 y uno mas de 4/5 para un total de tres clases ganadoras. Las
clases ganadoras nos pegaran al Sr. Fine y a mi a la pared usando cinta adhesiva! Como
verán, hacemos todo lo posible para animar a nuestros estudiantes a leer! Así es que por favor
recuérdeles que leen durante las vacaciones de primavera.
También quiero aprovechar esta oportunidad para recordarles a los padres que no deben
bloquear la salida del área de parqueo cuando vienen a dejar o a recoger a sus hijos. Por favor
asegúrense de parquear únicamente en las áreas designadas para este fin, y así no impedirán
el paso de los otros carros.

Por ultimo, y con el fin de mantener a las familias de Georgian Forest al día en relación a lo
que esta ocurriendo en Sistema Escolar Publico del Condado de Montgomery (MCPS) , anexo
encontrarán información referente a programas y eventos que esta ocurriendo dentro del
comunidad escolar global. Por favor no duden en comunicarse conmigo si tienen alguna

Meet our Staff
Hi, my name is Mandy Davis and this is my 3rd year as the media specialist (aka school librarian) here at Georgian
Forest. I grew up here in Montgomery County, went to Messiah College in Pennsylvania, and came back home to get
my graduate degree from the University of Maryland. I currently live with my husband, our two cats, and our fish in
Carroll County. My job here at the Forest consists of working with the students and staff to both support what is being
learned in the classroom and build a love of reading. One of the best parts of my job is that I get to see all of the
students, and watch as they grow from pre-k or kindergarten all the way to 5th grade! I am continuously adding to our
library collection with books that can either mirror the experiences of our students or act as windows to show them new
experiences. When I am not in the library, I can also be found taking pictures for our school website and school
yearbook.

Thank you to all our wonderful volunteers, parents, students and teachers that helped make our Scholastic Book Fair
and our Story Night such a success! A special thank you to the volunteers who set up, cleaned up and ran the fair,
without you this event would not have been possible!

Lastly, our next PTA meeting will be held on Tuesday, April 5th, at 6:00pm; make sure to write the date on your

Linkages to Learning
The Women’s Group is participating in a six-week program about Nutrition. The group meets every Tuesday from
11:00am to 12:00pm in the Linkages offices. Feel free to drop by anytime to participate and pick up some useful
information!
Our Girls on the Run practices are Tuesday and Thursday from 4:00-5:00pm, rain or shine.
Our basketball club meets on Wednesdays from 4-5pm and the soccer club practices on Tuesdays from 4-5pm.
The next Parent Advisory Committee meeting will be held on Tuesday, June 7 th at 12:30pm.

Hola, mi nombre es Mandy Davis y este es mi tercer año como Especialista de Medios (Bibliotecaria) aquí en
Georgian Forest. Me críe en el Condado de Montgomery, después fui a Messiah College en Pennsylvania; luego
regrese a casa con el fin de hacer mi posgrado en la Universidad de Maryland. Actualmente vivo con mi esposo,
nuestros dos gatos, y nuestro pez en el condado de Carroll. Mi trabajo en la escuela consiste en trabajar con los
estudiantes y el personal de la escuela para apoyar lo que están aprendiendo en el salón de clase y crear en los
niños el amor por la lectura. Uno de las mejores aspectos de mi trabajo es que tengo la oportunidad de ver a todos los
estudiantes, y los veo crecer desde Pre-kínder o kínder hasta 5 grado! Continuamente estoy incrementando nuestra
colección de libros con textos que reflejen las experiencias de nuestros estudiantes o que actúan como ventanas
para mostrarles nuevas experiencias. Cuando no estoy en la biblioteca, me pueden encontrar tomando fotos para la
página de internet de la escuela y para nuestro anuario.

ENLACES PARA EL APRENDIZAJE
El Grupo de Mujeres esta participando en un programa de seis semanas cuyo tema es la Nutrición. Este grupo se
reúne los martes de 11:00 am a 12:00 pm en las oficinas de Enlaces. No dude en pasar en cualquier momento si
quiere participar y aprender acerca de un tema muy útil!
El Programa de las Niñas que Corren (Girls on the Run) tiene sus practicas los martes y los jueves de 4-5pm, sin
importar el tiempo (con sol o con lluvia).
Nuestro club de baloncesto se reúne los miércoles de 4-5pm y el club de futbol tiene sus practicas los martes de 45pm.
La próxima reunión de la Junta de Asesoramiento de los Padres será el martes, 7 de junio a las 12:30pm.

Operating Budget (English and Spanish)
County Executive Releases Operating Budget Recommendation for MCPS
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett has released his recommended operating budget for FY 2017 and is
proposing a $135.9 million increase in spending for MCPS. This is about $44 million less than the $2.5 billion operating
budget the Board of Education had requested. The Montgomery County Council will hold public hearings on the County
Executive’s budget recommendation on April 5, 6, and 7. This is an opportunity for parents, staff, students, and
community members to share their thoughts with county leaders about why it is important to fully fund the MCPS budget.

Prekindergarten/ Head Start Registration (English and Spanish)
PreK/Head Start Registration Begins March 14
Registration will begin on Monday, March 14, for prekindergarten and Head Start programs for the 2016–2017
school year. The programs serve income-eligible families with children who will be 4 years old by September
1, 2016, including children with disabilities. Walk-in applications will be accepted Monday through Friday, 9
a.m.–4 p.m., at Rocking Horse Road Center, 4910 Macon Road in Rockville. Additional information about
eligibility, registration, and required documents to complete an application is available on the MCPS website
at www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org, search “preK”, or by calling 301-230-0676.

Study Released on MCPS Choice and Special Academic Programs
MCPS has released its comprehensive study of choice and other special academic programs. The study was
commissioned by the Board of Education to analyze how well choice and special academic programs advance the
district’s mission, core purpose, and core values, and to recommend ways MCPS can improve these programs. Over
the next several months, MCPS will engage with the community and work to develop a plan to address the report’s
findings and recommendations. Three community dialogues are scheduled to discuss the recommendations and the
vision for choice within MCPS. The meetings will take place from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on April 6 at Gaithersburg High
School; April 18 at Kennedy High School; and May 5 at Walter Johnson High School. The report is available at
www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/info/choice/report.aspx, where feedback also can be submitted online.

Are You Up to the 5th Grade Challenge?
The MCPS Educational Foundation invites you to join local dignitaries and community leaders for a night of fun and celebration at
the fourth annual “Are You Up to the 5th Grade Challenge?” event on Monday, April 11. The event will be held at 7 p.m. at the
AFI Silver Theatre and Cultural Center, 8633 Colesville Road in Silver Spring. The event will test local celebrity contestants on
their knowledge of Grade 5 facts. Students from more than 20 MCPS elementary schools will participate in the event. The event is
free and open to the public. Those who wish to attend are asked to register online at: www.mcpsfoundation.org/fifth-grade-challenge2016.
The Educational Foundation provides grants, programs, and scholarships that improve educational opportunities for MCPS students.
