Dear Georgian Forest Families,
I would like to start off by wishing all our families a Happy New Year!
Winter weather has really descended on us; many of us are still trying to recover from
the Blizzard of 2016! This is why it is so important to check the MCPS website and/or
your local news channel to obtain up to date information regarding school closures and
delayed openings. You can also call the Telephone Information Line at 301-279-3673
to hear recorded emergency information, available in several languages. We don't
recommend contacting the school to obtain information given that there maybe times
when no staff is present in the building.
The recent inclement weather forced us to postpone our Family Math Night and our
Family Reading Night; these events have been rescheduled to February 17th and 24th,
respectively. I would like to reiterate how important it is for all our families to participate,
along with their children, in these functions. The goal of both Math and Reading Night
is to provide the parents/guardians with information about what their children are
learning and to supply them with tools and strategies that will enable them to contribute
to their children’s education at home. Our staff will also be present during these
gatherings to answer any questions or address any concerns the parent/guardians may
have. Our goal is to build a strong bond between the school and our families in benefit
of all our students; events such as these are designed to strength this bond. In order
to facilitate families being able to attend, we will provide round-trip transportation from
the Peppertree Leasing Office to Georgian Forest ES and dinner will be provided for all
our families. Please make sure to RSVP by calling the school at 301-460-2170, so we
can make sure to have enough food for everyone! We hope to see you there!
Lastly, and in order to keep GFES families updated about what is happening at
MCPS, attached please find information regarding programs and events that are
taking place within the global school community, Please do not hesitate to contact me
with any questions and/or concerns you may have related to this information.

Queridas Familias de Georgian Forest,
Quiero empezar deseándoles a todas nuestras familias un Feliz Año Nuevo!
El tiempo de invierno realmente ha descendido sobre nosotros ; muchos de nosotros todavía
estamos tratando de recuperarnos de la Tormenta del 2016! Es por esto que es tan importante
que estén revisando la pagina de internet
de MCPS y/o su noticiero local para obtener
información actualizada sobre cierres de escuelas y demoras en el inicio de la jornada escolar.
También pueden llamar a la Línea de Información Telefónica al 301-279-3673 para escuchar,
en español, mensajes grabados que contienen información de emergencia. No les
recomendamos llamar a la escuela para obtener este tipo de información, por cuanto pueden
haber momentos en que no hay ningún miembro del personal en las instalaciones de la escuela.
Las recientes inclemencias del tiempo nos obligaron a posponer nuestra Noche de Matemáticas
Familiar y la Noche de Lectura Familiar; estos eventos se han reprogramado para el 17 y 24 de
febrero, respectivamente. Quiero reiterar lo importante que es que todas nuestras familias
participen, conjuntamente con sus hijos, en estos eventos. La meta de la Noche de Lectura y de
la de Matemáticas es el de suministrarles a los padres/guardianes información acerca de lo que
están aprendiendo sus hijos y darles herramientas y estrategias que les permitirá contribuir a la
educación de sus hijos en la casa. El personal de la escuela esta presente en estas reuniones
para contestar cualquier pregunta o dirigirse a cualquier preocupación que los
padres/guardianes puedan tener. Nuestra meta es el de construir un vinculo fuerte entre la
escuela y las familias en beneficio de todos los estudiantes; eventos como estos están diseñados
para fortalecer este vinculo. Con el fin de facilitar la asistencia de las familias, proveeremos
transporte, de ida y de regreso, de la Oficina de Alquiler de Peppertree a Georgian Forest ES y
serviremos una cena para toda la familia. Por favor acuérdese de llamar a la escuela al 301-4602170 para confirmar que van a asistir , y así nos podamos asegurar de tener suficiente comida
para todos!. Esperamos verlos!

Meet our Staff
Jessie Bradbard is the head of our Math Night Committee:
Hi, I’m Jessie Bradbard and this is my 3rd year at Georgian Forest. My role here is as an Academic Intervention
teacher, but I mostly support students in whatever way I can. This year I am working with 4th and 5th grade to support
students with reading, and I also teach the 4/5 and 5/6 compacted math classes. Prior to joining the Grizzly Staff, I
taught for 7 years as a classroom teacher in second, fourth and fifth grades. I received my Master’s Degree in
Reading from Johns Hopkins University in 2008. I am fortunate to go home to my husband and 3 children, twins who
are 6 (boy/girl) and a 4 year old boy. I love playing sports and games and enjoy bringing that into my
classroom. Another role I have at Georgian Forest is coach of our staff softball team! I love being a Grizzly and I hope
to see many families around our beautiful school and community!

Calling All Parents!

Calling all volunteers! We are looking for GFES parents to volunteer for our Spring Book Fair that will be held from
March 14th to the 18th. We need many volunteers to ensure the success of this event. Please sign up for shifts at the
SignUp Genius link on the PTA website http://gfespta.my-pta.org . Volunteers will be given gift certificates to use at the
Book Fair.
Please remember that Georgian Forest Elementary School participates in the Box Tops for Education™ program.
Clipping Box Tops is an easy way for you to help our school buy what it needs. Box Tops are each worth 10¢, and they
quickly add up to real cash for our school. Ask your friends and family to join in. To help our school, just look for pink
Box Tops on products, clip them, and send them to school.
Linkages to Learning
Registration for our ESOL classes will be held on Tuesday, February 2nd and classes will start on Thursday, February
4th. Classes will be held, in the school building, every Tuesday and Thursday from 6:00 to 8:00pm and are open to
parents and relatives of students of Georgian Forest ES. Please note that in case of inclement weather, registration
will be held on Thursday, February 4th and classes will start on Tuesday, February 9th.
Information regarding our Girls on the Run program will be sent home the week of February 1st and registration is
scheduled to start after February 9th. First practice is March 8th. Practices are Tuesday and Thursday from 4:005:00pm. Practice will be cancelled in case of inclement weather. Please note that this program is open t o girls in
grades 3-5.
Miscellaneous
We would like to remind all parents/guardians to make sure that your child’s Student Emergency Information Form is
updated. The school should be informed immediately of any changes in your phone number or address. We need to
ensure that we can contact all parents/guardians in an emergency situation.

Jessie Bradbard encabeza nuestro Comité de la Noche de Matematicas:
Hola! Mi nombre es Jessie Bradbard y este es mi tercer año trabajando en Georgian Forest. Mi función en la escuela
es el de ser maestra de Intervención Académica, pero generalmente apoyo a los estudiantes en todo lo que pueda.
Este año estoy trabajando con los estudiantes de 4º y 5º grado, apoyándolos en la parte de lectura y adicionalmente
estoy enseñando las clases de matemáticas compactadas de 4/5 y 5/6. Antes de pertenecer al personal de escuela,
fui maestra de segundo, cuarto y quinto grado por 7 años. Recibí mi Maestría en Lectura de la Universidad de Johns
Hopkins en el 2008. Tengo al fortuna de poder compartir mi casa con mi marido y nuestros tres hijos, los gemelos que
tienen 6 años (niño/niña) y mi hijo de 4 años. Me encantan los deportes y los juegos y me gusta introducir estos temas
a mi salón de clase. Otro papel que juego en Georgian Forest es el de ser la entrenadora del equipo de softbol de los
trabajadores. Me encanta ser un Grizzly y espero ver muchas de nuestras familias en nuestra linda escuela y en la
comunidad!

Llamando a todos nuestros voluntarios! Estamos buscando padres de GFES que puedan servir de voluntarios
durante la Feria del Libro que realizará el PTA esta primavera, durante la semana del 14 al 18 de marzo. Necesitamos

ENLACES PARA EL APRENDIZAJE

The FY 2017 Operating Budget—A Call to Fund Our Future
Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers submitted a $2.4 billion Recommended Operating Budget for Fiscal Year 2017 to
the Board of Education on December 8. Mr. Bowers’ operating budget recommendation includes investments to improve
student literacy and math skills; build the cultural proficiency of staff; foster stronger partnerships with the community
and our families to support students; and better organize the district to ensure every student is prepared for college and
careers.
There are a variety of ways that you can learn more about the MCPS budget and become involved in the budget process
this year, including the new Budget 101 website; Neighbor to Neighbor small-group discussions; Parent Academy
workshops; and an overview video and other budget materials available on the MCPS budget webpage. Visit the budget

ADVOCACY OPPORTUNITIES
MCPS Operating Budget: Let Your Voice Be Heard
Interim Superintendent Larry Bowers’ proposed Fiscal Year 2017 Operating Budget is intended to strengthen the school
system’s foundation, which has been squeezed by eight years of difficult economic times. The recommended budget
increase is a modest 4.5 percent, which will pay for the same level of services for more than 2,500 new students and
includes limited investments to improve students’ literacy and math skills; build the cultural proficiency of staff; foster
stronger partnerships with the community and families to support students; and better organize the district to ensure
every student is prepared for college and careers. MCPS needs full funding of its budget thisyear to prevent further
cuts and to begin reinvesting in education. Anything less tha n full funding would likely require further cutsthat
could impact every school.
Be sure to share your ideas and views on the importance of funding the MCPS operating budget with our elected
Montgomery County officials—the Montgomery County Board of Education, the County Executive, and the Montgomery
County Council—through emails, letters, short videos, and testimonials. The Board of Education will be holding two
public hearings on the budget recommendation: the first was Thursday, January 7; the second is Thursday, January 14.
Montgomery County Executive Isiah Leggett will be holding five budget forums in January to seek input from residents
about the county’s FY 2017 budget priorities. The remaining forums, which begin at 7 p.m., are scheduled as follows:
 January 11, Bethesda-Chevy Chase Regional Services Center, 4805 Edgemoor Lane, Bethesda
 January 20, Silver Spring Regional Services Center, One Veterans Place, Silver Spring
 January 21, Mid-County Community Recreation Center, 2004 Queensguard Road, Silver Spring
 January 25, BlackRock Center for the Arts, 12901 Town Commons Drive, Germantown
Five Education Budget Meetings, presented by Montgomery County Councilmember Craig Rice, MCPS Interim
Superintendent Larry Bowers, and Montgomery College President DeRionne Pollard, are scheduled for February and
March. Find out how budget decisions are made, what the county is doing today to get ready for FY 2017 and beyond,
and the opportunities residents have to influence budget decisions. The meetings will take place from 6:30 to 8:00 p.m.

The County Executive will announce his Recommended FY 2017 Operating Budget on March 15. In April, the County
Council will hold public hearings and approve the operating budget at the end of May.

Plan to Attend a Budget 101 Parent Academy Workshop
Do you want to learn how the MCPS operating budget is built and gain a deeper understanding of why it’s essential to
invest in our schools? Mark your calendar for one of three Budget 101 Parent Academy workshops that MCPS is hosting
this winter. You’ll learn where our funding comes from, how it’s spent, and how individual schools are staffed to ensure
we are meeting the needs of every student. The workshops are scheduled for January 20 at Francis Scott Key Middle
School in Silver Spring; February 17 at the Carver Educational Services Center in Rockville; and March 7 at Forest Oak
Middle School in Gaithersburg. All workshops begin at 7:00 p.m. Childcare is provided for children ages 4 through 12.

Parent Academy (English and Spanish)
Winter 2016 Parent Academy
The MCPS Parent Academy is back with an exciting lineup of free workshops for parents! Parent Academy workshops
give parents useful tips and tools to support their children’s success in and out of school. A wide array of topics will be
covered during the winter session, including college and career planning, helping teens manage stress, literacy, the
MCPS operating budget, recognizing child abuse and neglect, and much more. All of the workshops are free and are
