News from the Classrooms:____________________________________
3rd Grade: Our thir d gr ader s have spr ung into action for four th quar ter ! Dur ing the four th quar ter in Language Arts, students will engage in an author study of Eric A. Kimmel comparing characteristics of folktales and myths. They will also compare the main idea and theme of two texts by the same
author and then move into non-fiction text. In writing, students are putting the “finishing touches” on their original
realistic fiction story books. Then they will conduct research about an issue by examining the pros and cons and write a
newsletter. In Social Studies, the topic of study will be Economics where students will learn about budgeting money.
They will also learn the steps for producing a product and become participants in an open market. Science instruction
will consist of lessons about natural resources and how they are used to meet human needs. Thank you for continuing
to encourage our scholars to read daily and to work on memorizing their multiplication facts.
4th Grade: Dur ing the 4th marking period we will be continuing our exploration of poetry, drama, prose, and idioms.
Specifically, summarizing, paraphrasing, determining perspective, and cause and effect. Students will continue to
write informational, narrative, and opinion pieces. This quarter students will write a personal ode as well as create an
informational newsletter about a weather phenomenon. In math, students will be learning geometry, number and operations, measurement, and algebraic thinking. We will be working on angles, lines, decimals, multiplication, and division. As we finish out the remainder of the school year we will be focused on the foundations and functions of government today. We will study the three branches of government, the rights and responsibilities of individuals, and apply
this knowledge to real world scenarios. In science, we will be starting our final unit which is Rocks and Minerals. Students will be learning about the three types of rocks. They will be conducting investigations to determine the difference
between
5th Grade: We can't believe that this is the last quar ter for our fifth gr ader s. As we pr epar e them for middle
school in this last quarter, we will end the year studying informational text, poetry and drama in reading. Our students
will even write their own informational text poem! In math, students are adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing
decimals. They are also diving deep into geometry and even data and statistics. Let's not forget about getting our students ready to start thinking about career choices. In social studies, students will explore and research a variety of careers and learn how to be financially literate. For science during this last quarter, our students will be exposed to using
microscopes and learning about both plant and animal cells. As you can see, we have many items to accomplish as we
bring this school year to an end. Please encourage your child to continue to be motivated and persistent
during these last few weeks!

Welcome Back! I hope that you have enjoyed the spring vacation and the spring weather. We are in the final quarter of
learning for this school year and believe it or not already preparing for next school year. I need your help in planning as
well. Each year the Office of Human Resources and Development determines the staffing allocations for each school based
on student enrollment. It is very important that we have an
accurate projection of the number of students we are expecting
for the 2015-2016 school year. Attached to this week’s newsletter is the Student Returning form. If you are a parent of a
3rd or 4th gr ade student please complete the for m and r eturn it to your child’s teacher. Thank you for your assistance.
Sincerely,
Ms. Gorden

Health Room News: Aller gy Season is her e! While most of us welcome the beautiful season of spring, it can be a time of misery and difficulty for those who have allergies and asthma.
If your child suffers from seasonal allergies (stuffy nose, cough, red, watery and itchy eyes) or
has asthma related to allergies, we encourage you to please help them keep their symptoms under control. If your child takes medication, please give it BEFORE they come to school. They
will feel better and in turn, learn better. If your child uses an inhaler, it is always better to have
it before an emergency arises. Medication forms for inhalers can be obtained from the health
room and can also be downloaded from the MCPS website (search: Forms # 525-13). If you
have any questions please call the Health Room.
Lost & Found Items: It’s spring cleaning time! Please have your child check out the
lost and found to reclaim any clothing that may have been misplaced. You are also
welcome to come and take a look. All unclaimed items will be donated to the Goodwill. Last day is Friday, April 24, 2015.
Take Your Child to Work Day! If you are planning to participant in this annual event and take your child to
work with you, please submit a note to the office either prior to the date or when your child returns. Your
child will be granted an excused absence for this date only.
