Here is What is Happening in the Classrooms
During this quarter, students will learn about poetry and plays in Reading. They will draft informative writing pieces as a part of a final project. In Mathematics, students will continue learning multiplication and division strategies. We encourage you to practice multiplication strategies
at home. In Science, we will be teaching about changes in physical properties of matter. We will
be looking at changes in natural and physical features in Social Studies. Please continue to encourage your child to read a minimum of 20 minutes per night (a chapter book can be read the entire week) and sign their reading log. Also, monitor their homework to be sure that assignments are being
completed daily.
We’re off to a great start with our actors and poets! Our students have been discussing the structure of a play and describing the characters, setting, and events. After which, they will analyze
how structural elements of plays provide more information about the story, along with learning
about poetic elements including verse, rhythm, and meter, and compare the structure of poetry to
the structure of a play. In math, students will be multiplying and dividing a whole number (up to
four digits) by a one digit whole number using partial product, place value strategies, and area model. We
will also investigate measurement and data by finding the area and perimeter of a rectangle. Please study
their basic facts every night for 20 minutes. In science, we are still investigating our ecosystems and identifying natural and human-influenced events that can cause changes in an ecosystem. For social studies students
will be learning economics as well as Maryland history.
Wow! The 5th grade tam can't believe that the first Quarter of school is already over. The 5th graders have been immersed in reading Adventure stories, Tall Tales, and Non-fiction text. To top it off,
they have written their own adventure stories and formulated personal opinions about a topic of
choice. In Science students have used engineering to design roller coasters and physical science to
explain how motion and energy are used within their design. For math, students have worked hard
learning how to add and subtract decimals as well as understand the place value of decimals digits. During
the second quarter, students will continue to write both fiction and non-fiction text in writing. They will read
about the American Revolution and why it even began. To top it off, in math, students will continue to learn
about decimals. Eventually during the second quarter, they will review division and learn about equivalent
fractions and multiplying fractions. Please continue to encourage your child to study their basic facts and
read for at least 20 minutes at home. You would be surprised at how much progress students can make just
by completing those two activities at home!

changes that take place for our students and our goal is to be a partner
with you to ensure that you are aware of the instructional program,
their performance and the next steps in student learning. In addition
to what our students are learning, I hope you learned something new
as well. Lastly, I want to express my appreciation for all you do to
prepare your children for school and the support you provide to our
staff so that our students are successful.
