The Metamorphosis Project 2014 Learning Conference July 21‐23 Mountain Brook High School MB‐S14231 Common Psychological Problems in Schools: Depression, Anxiety, and Self‐Harm Tuesday, July 22 8:00‐11:00 a.m. MBHS Target Audience: Teachers 4‐12, Administrators, Special Teachers Every school serves a significant number of students with significant mental illness. Among the most concerning are clinical depression and serious anxiety. Associated (but not exclusive) to depression is the problem of student self‐harm, including non‐suicidal self‐harm ("cutting"), suicidal gestures, suicide threats, suicide attempts and deaths by suicide. In this presentation, we will cover some of the fundamentals of common mood disorders in student populations, along with some features of a good prevention, detection, and response program for schools.
